브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 강선우 무소속 의원에게 공천헌금 1억 원을 전달한 혐의로 수사를 받아온 김경 서울시의원이 26일 시의원직에서 사퇴했다.
김 시의원은 이날 입장문을 통해 "오늘 시의회 의장에게 시의원직 사직서를 제출했다"며 "공직자로서 지켜야 할 도덕적 책무를 다하지 못한 점에 대해 무거운 책임을 통감한다. 저의 불찰이며 어떤 변명도 하지 않겠다"고 밝혔다.
김 시의원은 강선우 의원에게 공천헌금 명목으로 1억 원을 건넸다가 돌려받은 혐의를 받고 있다. 이와 관련해 서울경찰청 공공범죄수사대는 정치자금법 위반 혐의 등을 적용해 김 시의원을 피의자 신분으로 세 차례 소환 조사한 바 있다.
당초 서울시의회는 오는 27일 윤리특별위원회를 열어 김 시의원에 대한 징계 수위를 최종 논의할 예정이었다. 비위 의혹의 성격과 규모가 중대하다는 점에서 최고 수위인 ‘제명’ 가능성도 거론돼 왔다.
이에 대해 김 시의원은 "모든 책임을 지고 물러나겠다"며 "이유 여하를 막론하고 금전 문제에 연루된 것만으로도 시민을 대표하기에 부족하다"고 말했다. 이어 "저를 믿고 선택해주신 시민 여러분께 깊은 실망을 안겨드린 점을 반성하며, 의원직 사퇴로 그 책임을 대신하겠다"고 밝혔다.
또 "직을 내려놓은 이후에도 이어질 모든 수사와 조사 과정에 성실히 임하겠다"며 "어떠한 숨김도 없이 진실을 밝히고, 저의 잘못에 상응하는 법적 처벌을 달게 받겠다"고 덧붙였다.
한편 경찰은 김 시의원이 2023년 강서구청장 보궐선거 출마를 위해 다른 정치인들과 접촉을 시도한 정황이 담긴 녹취를 확보하고 관련 의혹에 대해 수사 중이다.
