26일 원주시에 따르면, 우산산단은 과거 터미널 이전과 IMF, 코로나19 등 숱한 위기를 겪었으나 최근 도시재생 뉴딜사업과 맞물려 부활의 신호탄을 쏘아 올리고 있다. 옛 터미널 부지에 ‘강원 사회적경제혁신타운’이 들어서고 단계천 생태하천이 복원되면서 침체됐던 상권에 다시 활기가 돌기 시작한 것이다.
특히 산단의 맏형 격인 ‘삼양식품’의 활약이 눈부시다. 전 세계적인 ‘불닭볶음면’ 열풍을 주도하며 글로벌 기업으로 성장한 삼양식품은 우산산단이 단순한 노후 공단이 아닌, 글로벌 경쟁력을 갖춘 생산 기지임을 증명하고 있다.

이에 발맞춰 원주시는 우산산단에 새로운 색을 입힌다. 2024년 공모에 선정된 ‘활력 있는 아름다운 거리 조성 플러스 사업’을 통해 2027년까지 산단 주변 이면도로의 조도를 개선하고 녹지 공간과 편의시설을 확충한다. 삭막했던 공단 거리를 근로자와 주민들이 걷고 싶은 안전하고 쾌적한 공간으로 탈바꿈시킨다는 계획이다.
