군에 따르면 지난해 말 기준 지역 내 외국인 체납자는 575명으로, 체납액은 총 4000만 원에 달한다.

대부분 소액 체납이지만, 외국인 거주 인구 증가와 맞물려 체납 건수는 매년 꾸준히 늘고 있는 추세다.
군은 외국인 체납의 주요 원인으로 언어 장벽에 따른 제도 이해 부족을 꼽고, 올해부터 외국인 체납 관리 방식을 보다 구조적으로 개선하기로 했다.

군 관계자는 “외국어 체납 안내문 발송을 통해 외국인 납세자의 지방세 인식을 높이는 한편, 번호판 영치 등 강력한 체납 징수 활동을 병행해 실효성을 높이겠다”며 “빈틈없는 세무 행정으로 체납액을 지속적으로 축소해 나가겠다”고 말했다.
