올해 뉴욕의 겨울은 유난히 깊었습니다. 눈은 도시를 덮는 것이 아니라 시간을 덮는 듯 내렸습니다. 맨해튼의 빌딩 숲은 설원의 성곽처럼 고요했고, 허드슨강 위를 스치는 바람은 오래된 기억을 깨웠습니다.
나는 이 차가움을 압니다. 이 온도는 내 청춘의 온도이기도 합니다. 1980년대, 나는 뉴욕시 교외 롱아일랜드에 위치한 뉴욕주립대 스토니브룩 정치학과 학생이었습니다. 학비를 벌기 위해 겨울방학 동안 고려대와 연세대에서 영어 특강을 하고, 개강에 맞춰 뉴욕으로 돌아오면 케네디공항의 활주로는 늘 눈으로 덮여 있었습니다. 제설차의 붉은 불빛, 차가운 공기, 입김 사이로 스며들던 긴장과 설렘이 눈에 선합니다.
그때 나는 20대 청년이었고, 뉴욕은 거대한 세계였습니다. 주말이면 한국 음식이 그리워 맨해튼으로 향했습니다. 육개장 한 그릇이 작은 위로가 되던 시절이었습니다. 학교에서 맨해튼까지는 50분이 걸렸습니다. 그 50분은 이동 시간이 아니라 꿈과 현실의 거리였습니다. 사립대학인 컬럼비아대와 뉴욕대의 심장은 늘 가까웠지만, 내 일상은 교외에 머물러 있었습니다.
그러나 처음부터 나는 뉴욕을 향해 있었습니다. 사립대학의 학비는 당시 후진국 대한민국 청년에게 높은 벽이었습니다. 나는 고졸 검정고시 출신이었지만, 위스콘신대, 미네소타대, 텍사스대, 캘리포니아대 산타바바라, 그리고 뉴욕주립대 스토니브룩 등 여러 상위권 주립대에서 입학허가를 받았습니다. 그중에서 내가 선택한 것은 뉴욕이었습니다. 합리의 계산이 아니라, 이름이 주는 상징 때문이었습니다. 당시 뉴욕은 도시가 아니라 ‘세계’였습니다.

학부를 마친 뒤에도 갈림길은 있었습니다. 하버드대, 컬럼비아대, 터론토대에서 입학허가서를 받으면서 선택지는 화려했습니다. 그러나 나는 전액 장학금을 제시한 모교에 남았습니다. 이상은 높았지만, 삶은 현실 위에 세워지는 법이니까요.
세월이 흘러 다시 찾은 맨해튼입니다. 유엔본부와 도심의 빌딩 숲을 오가며 옛 기억이 겹쳐졌습니다. 타임스스퀘어의 열기, 센트럴파크의 겨울 아침, 브루클린 다리 위의 노을......
도시는 그대로였지만 그것을 바라보는 나는 달라져 있었습니다.
나는 두 번, 맨해튼을 삶으로 선택할 기회가 있었습니다. 1989년, 컬럼비아대 대학원 정치학과 입학허가서를 받았을 때와 2008년, 상하이 총영사 제안을 받았을 때 이명박 대선 캠프 국제위원장 출신으로 뉴욕 총영사를 또 하나의 선택지로 만들 수도 있었던 순간이 있었습니다.
그러나 맨해튼은 늘 가까우면서도 멀었습니다. 손을 뻗으면 닿을 듯했지만, 삶의 주소가 되지는 못했던 도시였습니다. 그럼에도 이 도시는 여전히 내 안에 남아 있습니다. 마치 아직 끝나지 않은 문장처럼.....
이번 겨울, 나는 깨달았습니다. 뉴욕은 단순한 도시가 아닙니다. 그곳은 시간이 겹쳐지는 장소입니다. 젊은 날의 야망과 지금의 성찰이 한 화면 위에 포개집니다. 만약 다시 기회가 온다면, 나는 맨해튼에서 몇 해를 살아보고 싶습니다. 방문객이 아니라 거주자로, 스쳐가는 이름이 아니라 일상의 일부로 말입니다.
뉴욕의 겨울은 차갑습니다. 그러나 그 차가움은 한 인간의 청춘을 가장 또렷하게 보존하는 온도이기도 합니다. 어쩌면 나는 한 번도 완전히 그 도시를 떠난 적이 없는지도 모르겠습니다.

This winter in New York felt unusually deep. The snow did not seem to cover the city, but to cover time itself. The forest of buildings in Manhattan stood quiet like the ramparts of a snowbound fortress, and the wind brushing across the Hudson River awakened long-buried memories.
I know this cold. It is the temperature of my youth.
In the 1980s, I was a political science student at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, located on Long Island, just outside New York City. To earn my tuition, I taught intensive English courses at Korea University and Yonsei University during winter breaks. When I returned to New York for the spring semester, the runways at JFK Airport were always blanketed in snow. The red lights of snowplows, the biting air, the tension and excitement rising with my breath—those images remain vivid.
I was in my twenties then, and New York was a vast world.
On weekends, when I longed for Korean food, I would head into Manhattan. A bowl of yukgaejang was a small but profound comfort. It took fifty minutes to travel from campus to the city. Those fifty minutes were not merely a commute; they were the distance between dreams and reality. The intellectual heartbeats of Columbia University and NYU were always near, yet my daily life remained in the suburbs.
But from the beginning, my compass pointed toward New York. Private university tuition was a high wall for a young man from what was then still a developing Korea. Although I had earned only a high school equivalency diploma, I was admitted to several top public universities—Wisconsin, Minnesota, Texas, UC Santa Barbara, and SUNY Stony Brook among them. I chose New York. It was not a calculation of reason, but the symbolism of a name. At the time, New York was not merely a city; it was “the world.”
After completing my undergraduate degree, I stood again at a crossroads. Admission letters arrived from Harvard, Columbia, and Toronto. The options were impressive. Yet I chose to remain at my alma mater, which offered a full scholarship. My ideals were high, but life is built upon reality.
Years later, I returned to Manhattan. As I moved between the United Nations headquarters and the city’s towering buildings, memories overlapped with the present—the energy of Times Square, winter mornings in Central Park, the sunset from the Brooklyn Bridge. The city was the same, but the man observing it had changed.
Twice, I had opportunities to choose Manhattan as a life, not just a destination. Once in 1989, when I received an admission letter from Columbia’s graduate program in political science. And again in 2008, when, having served as International Committee Chairman for Lee Myung-bak’s presidential election campaign and later appointed Consul General in Shanghai, New York could have become another posting, another chapter.
But Manhattan was always both near and far—close enough to touch, yet never my permanent address. Still, the city remains within me, like a sentence not yet finished.
This winter, I realized something: New York is not simply a city. It is a place where time overlaps. The ambition of youth and the reflection of the present rest upon the same frame. If the opportunity comes again, I would like to live in Manhattan for a few years—not as a visitor, but as a resident; not as a passing name, but as part of its daily rhythm.
New York winters are cold.
But that cold preserves, with startling clarity, the youth of a man. Perhaps I never truly left the city at all.
