박성만 경상북도의회 의장은 “협력을 말하면서도 독도 영유권을 주장하는 일본 정부의 이중적 태도는 결코 용납될 수 없다”며 “이번 발언은 한일 간 신뢰 회복에 찬물을 끼얹는 행위로, 국제사회로부터도 비판받아 마땅하다”고 밝혔다. 이어 “이는 역사적 사실을 왜곡하고 과거 침략의 책임을 회피하려는 왜곡된 역사관의 연장선”이라고 비판했다.
연규식 경상북도의회 독도수호특별위원회 위원장은 “왜곡된 주장 위에 한일 관계의 미래를 세울 수는 없다”며 “일본 정부가 진정으로 우호와 협력을 원한다면 독도에 대한 부당한 영유권 주장부터 즉각 철회해야 한다”고 촉구했다. 또한 “경상북도의회는 독도 수호를 위해 단호히 대응해 나가겠다”고 강조했다.
