법사위 '대전·충남 통합특별법' 의결 보류에 긴급 기자회견
"이장우·김태흠, 선거 유불리에 눈멀어 자치단체장 본분 망각" 강력 비판

더불어민주당 '충남대전통합 및 충청발전 특별위원회(이하 특위)'는 24일 오전 국회 법제사법위원회에서 대전·충남 및 대구·경북 행정통합 특별법 처리가 무산된 것과 관련해 기자회견을 열고, 국민의힘 소속 단체장과 정치권의 행태를 '후안무치한 발목잡기'로 규정하며 강력히 규탄했다.
특위는 회견문에서 "지방소멸이라는 절체절명의 위기 앞에서도 오직 '선거 유불리'와 '기득권 지키기'에 매달려 지역의 미래를 걷어차 버린 국민의힘의 행태에 분노한다"고 밝혔다.
특히 이번 법안 처리 무산의 주역이 해당 지역의 자치단체장인 이장우 대전시장과 김태흠 충남지사, 그리고 국민의힘이 장악한 시·도의회라는 점을 정면으로 겨냥했다.
특위는 "대전시와 충남도가 스스로 통합의 깃발을 먼저 들었음에도 불구하고, 내년 지방선거에서 정치적 입지가 흔들릴까 두려워 지역민의 염원인 통합을 하루아침에 뒤집어버렸다"고 성토했다.
특위는 현 정부가 지방소멸을 막기 위해 통합특별시에 파격적인 재정 지원과 권한 이양이라는 '통합 인센티브'를 제시했음을 강조했다.
이는 수도권 일극 체제를 타파할 강력한 무기임에도 불구하고, 국민의힘이 자신들이 추진하던 법안을 돌연 반대하며 소중한 기회를 스스로 날려버렸다는 지적이다.
또한 대구·경북 통합 역시 국민의힘 내부 의견조차 정리하지 못한 채 자중지란에 빠져 있다고 비판했다.
특위는 오는 3월 첫 본회의를 지역 균형성장의 명운을 가를 '마지막 분수령'으로 꼽으며 국민의힘에 당리당략에 따른 '통합 뒤집기' 즉각 중단 및 시도민 앞 사죄, 3월 본회의 일정에 맞춘 행정통합 특별법 통과를 위한 무조건적 협조, 무책임한 비난 중단 및 지역소멸 대응을 위한 실질적 대안 제시를 강력히 요구했다.
특위는 이날 "만약 3월 본회의마저 정쟁으로 법안 처리를 무산시킨다면, 국민의힘은 지역 발전을 가로막은 주범으로 역사의 심판을 피할 수 없을 것"이라며 "지방의 미래를 방치하는 무책임한 정치를 멈추라"고 경고했다.
