오후 내내 광화문 흥국생명빌딩에 머물렀다. 멀리 독일에서 온 지인과 함께 로비에 설치된 강익중의 ‘해피월드(Happy World)’ 연작 앞을 여러 번 오가며 시선을 오래 머물게 했다. 약 3인치 정사각 캔버스 8,060점이 집적되어 만들어낸 이 거대한 화면은 콜라주와 오브제, 스피커와 전자 장치까지 포괄하며 시각과 청각이 동시에 작동하는 융합의 미학을 구현한다. 길이 20미터에 달하는 메인 작품과 좌우로 펼쳐진 10미터 규모의 연작들은 개별의 작은 조각들이 모여 어떻게 하나의 대서사를 이룰 수 있는지를 묵묵히 증언하고 있었다.
대형 프로젝트를 추진 중인 그에게 ‘대서사를 어떻게 담아야 하느냐는 문제에 대하여 이보다 직관적인 장소는 없었다. 한참을 바라보던 그는 마침내 고개를 끄덕였고 이해란 결국 설명이 아니라 체감이라는 사실을 다시 확인했다.
돌아와 ‘가슴으로 듣는 50번째 노래’로 스페인 출신의 싱어송라이터 루쓰 까잘의 ‘검은 그림자(Negra Sombra)’ 자막 작업을 마무리했다. 이 곡은 갈리시아의 위대한 시인 **로살리아 데 카스트로**의 시에 음악을 입힌 작품으로, 한 지역의 언어와 한 개인의 고독이 어떻게 인류 보편의 감정으로 확장될 수 있는지를 보여주는 보기 드문 사례다. ‘검은 그림자’라는 메타포는 단순한 우울의 상징이 아니라, 인간 존재가 평생을 함께 살아가야 하는 상실과 기억의 그림자를 가리킨다.
