이날 행사에는 이철우 경상북도지사, 정희용 국회의원, 대구광역시 김정기 권한대행, 김장호 구미시장, 김진열 군위군수, 김재욱 칠곡군수, 국가철도공단 김종민 PM처장, 한국철도공사 이세형 대구본부장과 도·군의원, 지역주민 등 300여 명이 참석했다.
북삼역은 2019년부터 2026년까지 총사업비 478억 원을 투입해 건설됐으며, 지상 3층 규모로 승강장 2개소와 선상연결통로, 역광장, 지상주차장(36면) 등을 갖췄다. 28일 첫차를 시작으로 평일 94회(상행 47회·하행 47회), 주말 92회(상행 46회·하행 46회) 운행된다.
북삼역은 1905년 왜관역, 1918년 약목역 이후 100여 년 만에 칠곡군에 신설된 철도역이다. 지역 주민의 오랜 요구를 반영해 추가역으로 건립됐으며, 칠곡군과 국가철도공단이 2020년 협약을 체결한 뒤 2023년 12월 착공해 이번에 개통했다.
이번 개통으로 칠곡군 북삼읍을 비롯한 경북 서부권의 철도 접근성이 크게 개선될 전망이다. 인구 2만 명대가 거주하는 북삼읍은 그동안 대구권과의 생활권 연계 수요가 높았으나 철도 이용에 제약이 있었다. 북삼역 개통으로 정주·생활 인구 이동 편의가 향상되고, 북삼 도시개발사업(5천 세대 이상)과 북삼오평 일반산업단지(122만㎡) 조성에도 긍정적 영향을 미칠 것으로 기대된다.
경상북도는 역세권과 산업단지 연계 교통체계 강화 등 정주·산업 수요를 뒷받침하는 접근성 개선을 지속적으로 추진해 철도망 수혜지역 확대에 힘쓸 방침이다.
한편 2024년 말 개통된 대경선은 누적 이용객 500만 명을 기록하며 대구·경북을 잇는 광역 교통망으로 자리 잡았다. 북삼역 개통으로 칠곡군도 대경선 이용권에 포함되면서 광역철도 이용 편익이 한층 확대될 것으로 보인다.
이철우 지사는 “북삼역 개통으로 칠곡 지역의 철도 이용 여건이 개선될 것”이라며 “대경선을 중심으로 한 광역 교통체계를 차질 없이 추진하겠다”고 밝혔다.

Buksam Station is the first new railway station in Chilgok County in over 100 years, following Waegwan Station in 1905 and Yakmok Station in 1918.
