충남도의회가 1인 가구 증가와 고령화 시대의 새로운 블루오션으로 떠오른 ‘반려식물’ 산업을 충남의 미래 성장동력으로 낙점하고 본격적인 육성에 나섰다.
단순한 원예 산업을 넘어 정서적 교감과 치유, 관광이 결합된 ‘3차 융복합 생활산업’으로 체질을 개선해 지역 경제의 새로운 활로를 찾겠다는 복안이다.
충남도의회는 27일 태안문화원에서 ‘반려식물 산업에서 찾는 새로운 기회’를 주제로 의정토론회를 열고 구체적인 실행 전략을 논의했다.
토론회에 참석한 전문가들은 현대인의 스트레스 완화와 정서 안정에 반려식물이 미치는 긍정적 영향인 ‘바이오필리아(자연 친화 성향)’에 주목하며 산업적 가치를 높게 평가했다.
특히 국내 반려식물 시장 규모가 이미 2조 4천억 원대를 넘어선 가운데, 단순한 식물 판매보다 화분, 관리용품, 전문 케어 서비스 등 연관 산업 비중이 커지고 있다는 분석이 제시됐다.
이에 따라 대전·세종·충청권을 잇는 광역 단위의 ‘반려식물 클러스터’를 조성해 시장 주도권을 확보해야 한다는 목소리가 힘을 얻었다.
지정토론에서는 반려식물 산업을 지역 인프라와 결합하기 위한 혁신적인 아이디어들이 쏟아졌다. 서해안의 풍부한 관광자원과 농촌 체험 인프라를 활용해 ‘체험·체류형 관광 콘텐츠’를 확대하고, 이를 2026년 태안국제원예치유박람회와 전략적으로 연계해야 한다는 것이 핵심이다.
또한, 보건소나 치매안심센터와 연계해 식물 기르기를 치료의 일환으로 활용하는 ‘사회적 처방(Social Prescribing)’ 시스템과 구독형 전문 케어 서비스 모델 구축 필요성도 제기됐다. 이는 반려식물이 단순 취미를 넘어 공공 보건 및 복지 영역과 결합해 새로운 부가가치를 창출할 수 있음을 시사한다.
이번 토론회의 좌장을 맡은 윤희신 의원(태안1·국민의힘)은 천혜의 자원과 우수한 원예 기반을 갖춘 태안이 반려식물 산업을 선도할 최적지임을 강조했다.
윤 의원은 반려식물 산업이 생산 중심에서 관리, 치유, 관광이 어우러진 융복합 산업으로 전환되어야 할 시점임을 분명히 했다.
