이 위원장은 대구·경북 행정통합을 ‘국가 전략’이라고 강조했다. 그는 “이번 통합은 정쟁의 대상이 아니라, 수도권 일극 체제를 극복하고 지방 소멸 위기를 막기 위한 국가적 과제”라며 “법사위원장이 개인적 판단이나 정치적 계산으로 상임위 개최 권한을 사용하는 것은 정당화할 수 없다”고 지적했다.
특히 추미애 법사위원장을 향해 “국회의 책무는 지역 갈등을 조장하는 게 아니라 국가 미래를 위한 법안을 심의·결정하는 데 있다”며 “법제사법위원회를 즉시 열고, 대구·경북 행정통합 특별법을 조건 없이 상정·처리하라”고 요구했다.
또 이 위원장은 “어떠한 흥정이나 정치적 조건도 붙어선 안 된다. 대구·경북 시도민의 간절한 염원을 협상 카드로 삼는 일은 결코 용납될 수 없다”고 강조했다. 끝으로 “더 이상의 지연은 무책임한 처사”라며 “국민은 이 과정을 지켜보고 있다”고 덧붙였다.
