[브레이크뉴스=황민성 기자] 주한 대사 부인회 소속 방문단이 거제의 자연경관과 산업 현장을 탐방하기 위해 1박2일 일정으로 거제를 찾았다.

이번 방문은 지자체의 공식 초청이 아닌, 주한 대사 배우자들이 거제의 관광자원에 대한 관심을 바탕으로 자발적으로 마련한 일정이라는 점에서 의미가 있다. 

방문단은 호주 대사 부인 은영 로빈슨 여사를 비롯해 캐나다, 일본, 라트비아, 슬로베니아, 네덜란드, 튀르키예 등 7개국 대사 배우자와 관계자 등 총 11명으로 구성됐다.

변광용 거제시장은 3일 방문단과 간담회를 갖고 “거제는 천혜의 절경뿐만 아니라 세계 조선 산업을 이끄는 역동성이 공존하는 도시”라고 소개했다.

아울러 한국전쟁 당시 약 10만 명의 피란민을 수송한 ‘흥남철수작전’의 역사적 의미를 언급하며, 거제가 지닌 평화와 인류애의 가치를 공유했다. 

방문단은 3일부터 4일까지 한화오션 야드 투어를 시작으로 거제 파노라마 케이블카 탑승, 정월대보름 축제 참여 등 거제의 대표 관광·산업·문화 자원을 아우르는 일정을 소화할 예정이다.

거제시 관계자는 “이번 방문은 해외 외교 사절단이 거제의 관광자원에 주목해 자발적으로 방문했다는 점에서 상징성이 크다”며 “이번 방문이 거제를 글로벌 관광도시로 한 단계 도약시키는 계기가 되도록 지속적인 홍보를 이어가겠다”고 말했다.
