이 사업은 이공계 대학원생이 연구 활동에 전념할 수 있도록 경제적 안전망을 구축하기 위한 것으로, 정부 연구개발 과제 등을 통해 대학과 산학협력단에 지급되는 학생지원금에 정부 지원을 연계해 매월 일정 수준 이상의 연구생활장려금을 보장하는 제도다. 기준금액은 석사과정 월 80만 원, 박사과정 월 110만 원 이상이다.
올해 신규 사업에는 국립금오공대를 포함해 전국 8개 대학이 선정됐다. 국립금오공대는 사업 기간인 2026년부터 2033년까지 약 64억 원의 사업비를 확보하게 된다.
사업을 주관하는 국립금오공대 산학협력단은 확보한 지원금을 바탕으로 연구 활동을 수행하는 이공계 전일제 석·박사과정 대학원생에게 기준금액을 보장해 연구 몰입도를 높일 계획이다. 또한 연구실 성과지표 등을 평가해 우수 과제 인센티브를 지급하는 등 안정적인 연구 환경 조성에도 나설 방침이다.
권오형 산학협력단장은 “대학원생을 위한 안정적인 재정 지원을 통해 이공계 핵심 연구 인력의 진학을 촉진하고 과학기술 중심의 성장을 이끌 수 있을 것으로 기대한다”며 “이공계 대학원생의 연구와 학업 여건을 체계적으로 지원해 우수 인재를 육성하고, 이를 기반으로 지역 과학기술 허브로 도약하도록 노력하겠다”고 말했다.

The Kumoh National Institute of Technology's Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, which oversees the project, plans to use the secured funding to guarantee a standard amount of funding to full-time master's and doctoral students in science and engineering conducting research activities, thereby encouraging their engagement in research. It also plans to foster a stable research environment by evaluating lab performance indicators and providing incentives for outstanding projects.
Kwon Oh-hyung, Director of the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, stated, "We expect that stable financial support for graduate students will encourage the advancement of key science and engineering researchers and foster growth centered on science and technology. We will systematically support the research and academic environment of science and engineering graduate students to foster outstanding talent and, based on this foundation, strive to become a regional science and technology hub."
