주 시장은 17일 오전 경주시청 본관 앞에서 기자회견을 열고 “지난 8년간 시작한 변화와 도약을 완성해 더 큰 경주의 시대를 열겠다”고 밝혔다.
주 시장은 출마 선언이 늦어진 배경에 대해 “현직 시장으로서 시민 안전과 시정 현안을 끝까지 책임지는 것이 우선이었다”며 “SMR 초도기 유치 공모와 내년도 국비 확보 등 경주의 미래가 걸린 과제를 챙기느라 일정이 늦어졌다”고 설명했다. 이어 “선거보다 시민의 삶과 경주의 미래를 먼저 생각하는 것이 시장의 책무”라고 강조했다.

또 민선 8기에는 APEC 정상회의 유치·개최, 관광객 5천만 명 달성, SMR 국가산업단지 및 중수로해체기술원 유치 등을 성과로 들며 “경주 행정이 ‘신기록 제조기’라는 평가를 받아왔다”고 밝혔다.

그는 “임기 내 예산 3조 원 시대를 열어 시민이 체감하는 변화를 만들겠다”며 “관광과 산업, 교통과 복지가 함께 가는 균형 발전으로 경주 제2의 도약을 완성하겠다”고 밝혔다.
주 시장은 “경주에는 아직 3선 시장 선례가 없지만 지금 시작된 변화를 책임 있게 마무리하고 싶다”며 지지를 호소했다.
한편 주 시장은 기자회견 직후 경주시 선거관리위원회를 방문해 예비후보 등록을 마치고 본격적인 선거 행보에 돌입했다.
