활기 넘치는 전통시장의 생동감에 청년들의 예술적 감수성이 더해졌다. 안양시는 17일, 안양중앙시장 내 도시재생 청년예술인 활동공간인 ‘청년랩(Lab)’을 정식 개소하고 이를 기념하는 오프닝 전시회를 개최한다고 밝혔다.
만안구 냉천로 197(안양동 711-14) 3층에 자리 잡은 ‘청년랩’은 84㎡ 규모의 복합 문화예술 거점 공간이다. 전통시장 내 비어있던 유휴 점포를 젊은 예술인들의 창작 기지로 탈바꿈시킨 것이 특징으로, 앞으로 청년 작가들에게는 안정적인 활동 토대를 제공하고 시민들에게는 시장 안에서 문화를 즐기는 색다른 경험을 선사할 예정이다.
개소를 기념해 마련된 ‘청년 예술인 오프닝 전시회’는 이달 31일까지 이어진다. 이번 전시에는 외국인 작가 2명을 포함해 안양시에서 활동하는 청년 예술인 17명이 참여했다. 회화부터 사진 아트까지 작가들의 개성이 담긴 다채로운 작품들이 시장을 찾은 방문객들의 눈길을 사로잡고 있다.
전시는 휴관일인 월요일을 제외하고 매일 오후 1시부터 8시까지 운영되며, 시장 상인은 물론 방문객 누구나 자유롭게 관람할 수 있다. 시는 이번 전시를 시작으로 청년랩을 거점 삼아 전통시장 상권과 연계한 다양한 문화예술 프로그램을 본격적으로 가동할 방침이다.
이번 사업은 ‘경기 더드림 재생사업’의 일환으로 추진됐으며, 안양시 도시재생지원센터가 주최하고 도시재생 청년예술인협동조합이 주관을 맡았다. 안양시는 청년랩 운영이 예술인 지원을 넘어 시장으로의 젊은 층 유입을 이끌어내 지역 상권 활성화에도 긍정적인 역할을 할 것으로 내다보고 있다.
안양시 관계자는 “전통시장과 예술의 결합은 청년 작가에게는 기회를, 시민에게는 일상 속 문화 향유의 즐거움을 주는 의미 있는 시도”라며 “앞으로도 도시재생을 통해 지역 상권과 지역 문화가 함께 성장할 수 있는 모델을 지속적으로 만들어가겠다”고 전했다.
