세종특별자치시교육청이 인공지능(AI) 시대를 이끌어갈 창의적인 디지털 시민 양성을 위해 교육 현장의 대대적인 체질 개선에 나선다.
세종시교육청은 관내 학교의 AI 교육 환경을 전국 최고 수준으로 끌어올리기 위한 ‘2026년 AI 중점학교 운영 계획’을 발표하고 본격적인 행보를 시작했다.
이를 위해 세종시교육청은 2026년 3월부터 1년간 초등학교 21개교, 중학교 10개교, 고등학교 11개교 등 총 42개교를 ‘AI 중점학교’로 지정해 운영한다.
총 24억 원의 예산이 투입되는 이번 사업은 전체 학교 수 대비 운영 비율 면에서 전국 최고 수준을 자랑하며, 세종시를 대한민국 AI 교육의 메카로 만들겠다는 의지가 담겨 있다.
AI 중점학교는 학교별 특성과 여건에 따라 세 가지 유형으로 나뉘어 운영된다. 우선 ‘AI·정보교육 선도형’에는 조치원교동초와 보람초 등 초등학교 4개교가 선정되었으며, 학교당 1억 5,500만 원을 지원해 AI 전용 교실을 구축하고 미래형 교육 환경의 표준을 제시한다.
‘AI·정보교육 중심형’에는 초·중·고 15개교가 참여해 학교자율시간을 활용한 교과 시수 확대를 추진하며, ‘문화확산형’으로 지정된 23개교는 창의적 체험활동과 방과후학교를 통해 교내 AI 교육 문화를 확산하는 역할을 수행한다.
교육의 실질적인 내실화를 위해 교육과정 편성 기준도 강화했다.
선도형 학교를 기준으로 초등학교 5~6학년의 정보 수업을 68시간 이상 편성하고, 중학교는 정보 교과 수업 시수를 102시간까지 확대 운영한다. 고등학교에서도 AI 관련 과목을 필수적으로 운영하거나 매 학기 편성하도록 권장해 교육의 연속성을 확보한다는 구상이다.
또한 학생들의 자발적인 탐구를 돕기 위해 학생 주도형 동아리인 ‘이도학생학습공동체’를 운영하고, 인근 대학 및 전문 기관과 연계한 전문가 특강, 해커톤 대회 참여 등 현장감 있는 프로그램을 다각도로 지원한다.
교육청은 교사들의 수업 역량을 강화하는 데도 행정력을 집중한다. 오는 4월부터 8월까지 AI 교육 전문가로 구성된 컨설팅단을 가동해 학교별 상황에 맞는 맞춤형 지원을 실시하며, 교원 공동 연수와 교수·학습 자료의 개발 및 보급을 통해 교육 현장의 어려움을 적극적으로 해소할 계획이다.
세종시교육청 관계자는 이번 사업을 통해 세종의 학생들이 단순히 기술을 익히는 것을 넘어 인공지능을 활용해 삶의 문제를 창의적으로 해결하는 미래 인재로 성장할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다고 밝혔다.
