이번 사업에는 총사업비 211억 원이 투입되며 단양읍 별곡리 656-1번지 일원에 연면적 6,451㎡ 규모의 지하 1층·지상 3층 복합건축물이 들어설 예정이다.
시설에는 공공임대상가와 리버뷰 카페, 전시홍보관, 어울림센터, 시니어행복센터 등 다양한 기능이 들어서며 주차 공간도 129면 규모로 조성된다.
단양읍 원도심은 상권 노후화와 인구 감소 등으로 활력이 점차 약화되면서 새로운 생활·문화 거점 공간 조성의 필요성이 꾸준히 제기돼 왔다.

특히 2024년 단양서울병원 철거 이후 사업 추진 기반을 마련했으며, 2025년 기본 및 실시설계를 완료한 데 이어 올해 2월 시공사를 선정하면서 본격적인 공사 단계에 들어섰다.
다누리 커뮤니티 플라자가 완공되면 주민들이 자유롭게 소통하고 교류할 수 있는 지역 공동체 거점 공간이 마련되는 동시에 공공임대상가와 문화·전시 기능이 결합된 복합시설로 원도심 상권 활성화에도 기여할 것으로 기대된다.
군 관계자는 “다누리 커뮤니티 플라자는 단순한 건축물을 넘어 원도심에 새로운 활력을 불어넣는 도시재생의 상징적인 공간이 될 것”이라며 “주민과 방문객이 함께 찾는 열린 커뮤니티 공간으로 조성해 지역 상권 활성화와 공동체 회복을 동시에 이끌어 나가겠다”고 말했다.
