월성원자력본부, 양남중 학생 대상 ‘방사선탐구 과학교실’ 운영

월성원자력본부(본부장 권원택)는 지난 3월 30일 경주 양남중학교 학생들을 대상으로 동경주 미래세대 ‘방사선탐구 과학교실’을 개최했다고 밝혔다.

이번 프로그램은 원자력발전 원리와 월성 2·3·4호기 계속운전, 방사선 기초지식 등을 학습하고, 학교 내 다양한 공간에서 자연방사선 수치를 직접 측정해보는 체험형 교육으로 구성됐다.

학생들은 교실과 운동장, 복도, 체육관 등 일상 공간을 직접 이동하며 방사선 계측장비를 활용해 수치를 측정하고, 이를 바탕으로 ‘학교 방사선 지도’를 제작하는 활동에 참여했다. 또한 방사선이 활용되는 다양한 산업 분야를 탐구하고 발표하는 시간을 통해 진로 탐색과 연계된 교육도 함께 진행됐다.

특히 참가 학생들은 프로그램 전반에 적극적으로 참여하며 방사선에 대한 궁금증을 해소하는 모습을 보였다. 우수 발표자로 선정된 한 3학년 학생은 “생활 속에도 방사선이 존재한다는 사실을 직접 확인하고 나니 막연한 불안감이 줄어들었다”고 소감을 밝혔다.

월성원자력본부는 매년 동경주 지역 학교를 대상으로 해당 프로그램을 운영하고 있으며, 방사선에 대한 올바른 이해를 돕고 원자력·방사선 분야 진로 탐색 기회를 제공하는 데 주력하고 있다.

월성원자력본부 관계자는 “미래세대가 원자력과 방사선에 대해 정확히 이해하고 관련 분야의 인재로 성장할 수 있도록 다양한 교육 프로그램을 지속 확대해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant Operates ‘Radiation Exploration Science Class’ for Yangnam Middle School Students

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant operated an experiential education program for local youth to enhance their understanding of nuclear power and radiation.

The Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant (Director Kwon Won-taek) announced that it held the "East Gyeongju Future Generation Radiation Exploration Science Class" for students at Yangnam Middle School in Gyeongju on March 30.

This program consisted of experiential education designed to allow students to learn the principles of nuclear power generation, the continued operation of Wolsong Units 2, 3, and 4, and basic knowledge of radiation, as well as to directly measure natural radiation levels in various spaces within the school.

Students participated in activities where they moved through everyday spaces such as classrooms, playgrounds, hallways, and gymnasiums to measure levels using radiation measuring equipment and create a "School Radiation Map" based on the results. Additionally, education linked to career exploration was conducted through sessions where students explored and presented on various industrial fields where radiation is utilized.

In particular, participating students actively engaged throughout the program and demonstrated that they were resolving their curiosity about radiation. One third-year student, selected as an outstanding presenter, shared their thoughts, stating, "My vague anxiety has diminished after personally confirming that radiation exists in our daily lives."

The Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant operates this program annually for schools in the East Gyeongju region, focusing on fostering a proper understanding of radiation and providing opportunities for career exploration in the nuclear and radiation fields.

An official from the Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant stated, "We will continue to expand various educational programs to ensure that future generations accurately understand nuclear power and radiation and grow into talented individuals in related fields."
