오태규 소설가는 이 책의 서문격인 작가의 말에서 “‘당신’은 MB가 2008년에 집권하자마자 내가 쓰기 시작한 ‘장편소설’(autofiction)이다. 2019년까지 12년 동안에 일어났던 일들을 빠짐없이 소설로 형상화했다. ‘질풍노도시대’를 살아가면서 느끼고 생각한 것을, 작가의 내면풍경과 천변만화의 시대상 속에 낱낱이 증언해놓았다.”면서 “제목인 ‘당신’은 다중적의미로 쓰였다. 우선 소설을 쓰고 있는 필자를 가리킨다. 바로 고뇌하는 사람 ‘아고니스트’이다. 가장 위대한 ‘당신’은 예수였다. 겟세마네에서 고뇌에 찬 그의 기도는 핏방울이었다. 가장 소중한 ‘당신’은 내 모든 지성과 감성을 쏟아놓을 때 내가 다가가서 붙잡고 의지하고 싶었던 무수한 타인들이다. 그들은 발칙하고 당돌한 내 언어가 살아남을 수 있는 종착지요 고향이었다. ‘당신’은 우리시대 어둠의 가면을 가차 없이 벗겨 보이는 바로 ‘당신들’의 이야기”이라고 설명했다 이어 “그동안 아름다운 모국어를 누구보다 허투루 낭비해 버린 죄를‘당신’에서 비단결같이 촘촘하고 섬세하고 유려한 문장을 남김으로써 사죄하고 싶었다. 격앙된 시대정서나 중독된 이데올로기를 아름다운 문체로써 녹여내고 치유할 수 있었던 것은 더없는 기쁨이었다.”고 강조했다.
오태규 소설가는 “천신만고 끝에 책이 나왔다. 지난 수개월 동안 나는‘목숨처럼 사랑한다’‘작가를 죽일 뻔했다’‘이 잔을 지나가게 하소서’이런‘탄식’을 입에 달고 살았다. 이제 ‘당신’은 제 갈 길을 떠났다. “거리를 휩쓸고 지나가는 ‘한줄기 망각의 바람’이냐, 만인의 심금을 울리는‘한 움큼 감동의 햇살’이냐.” “외톨이로 떠돌 것이냐, 금의환향할 것이냐”는 여러분에게 달려 있다. 나의 ‘비명소리’가 다시 들려오기 시작한다“고 피력했다.

익명성 속의‘당신’
도시산보에서 마주치는 타인은 언제나 익명이다. 산보자는 그 익명성을 통해 개별 인간이 아니라 시대의 집단적 초상을 읽어낸다.‘당신’은 특정한 개인이 아니라 도시 군중 속에서 마주치는 모든 얼굴들의 집합적 초상이다. 그 익명성 속에서 작가는 시대의 상처와 자신의 내면을 동시에 바라본다.‘당신’은 신보자가 도시에서 만나는 타자이자, 자기 자신이며, 시대의 알레고리이다.
존재론적 거울인‘당신’

Who is Novelist Oh Tae-gyu?
He passed the English teacher certification exam administered by the Ministry of Education while still in high school. He taught English at Suncheon High School, Suncheon University, and Dankook University, among others.
