“나는 1959년생이다. 나이 6-7세부터 한문서예를 했다. 아버지가 한문을 가르치는 서당을 했기 때문에 자연스럽게 한문 서예를 하게 됐다. 초등학교-중학교 시절에도 방과 후에 한문서예를 계속하게 됐다. 고등학교 때도 계속했다. 대학은 1984년, 전북대학교 중어문학과를 졸업했다. 학창시절에 서예도 하고, 시도 썼다. 그런가하면 소설도 썼다. 그런데 서예를 잘 할 것 같아 서예를 선택하게 됐다. 전북 전주 입구에 '호남제일문'이란 현판이 있다. 이 현판을 쓰신 분이 강암 송성용 서예가인데, 이 분이 외종조부이시다. 이분 문하에 들어가서 서예를 배웠다. 이때 서예가가 되기로 마음을 굳혔다. 경쟁을 하지 않고 혼자서 노력하는 게 좋았다. 30세 들어 선생님을 모시고 본격적으로 공부했다. 하석 박원규 선생의 제자가 되어서 서예공부를 했다. 35세 때 개인전을 처음으로 열었다.“

자신만의 한글서예체를 만들어내는데 성공한 김 작가는 자신만의 필법(筆法)으로 만든 작품을 전시해왔다.
“지난 2008년, '상형한글체(상형성+조형성)', 첫 서예 전시회를 서울 인사동에서 열게 됐다. 당시 이어령 전 문화부장관이 머리말도 써 주었다. '상형한글' 서예 전시회는 지난 2014년, 2018년, 2019년에 열렸다. 특히 지난 2014년 전시회는 대규모 였다. 작품 200여 점을 전시했다. 높이 14m, 가로 12m의 대작(도종환 시인의 시, '내가 사랑하는 당신은')도 선보였다. 2019년경부터서는 한글서예에 대한 확신이 들기 시작했다. 그래서 2020년부터서는 한글서예 작품에 있어 상형(象形)을 넘어 추상(抽象)으로 가게 됐다. 2020년부터는 한글서예만이 아니라 알파벳, 세계의 모든 문자를 작품화하는 문자추상으로 옮아가게 됐다. 2020년 인사동 백악미술관에서 개최한 “I am 전시회'는 문자추상 작품들이 출품됐다. 한민족이 써온 고유한 문자인 한글 속에는 아름다움이 들어 있다. 한글 모양으로 멋있는 미(美, 아름다움)을 창조할 수 있게 됐다.”
