이승만 정권에서는 주간신문이 번성기였다. 600여개 이상의 주간신문이 발행됐었다. 1961년, 박정희 장군이 주도하는 5.16 군사 쿠데타가 일어났다. 박정희 군사정권은 주간신문을 말살했다. 주간신문을 발행하려면 윤전기를 설치해야 한다는 악법을 만들어 하루아침에 주간신문들을 말살하고야 말았다. 이 때문에 주간신문은 윤전기가 있는 일간신문의 부속품으로 전락하고 말았다.
노태우 정권 시절에야 발행이 조금이나마 자유로워졌다. 1961년 이후 첫 독립 주간신문이랄 수 있는 '토요신문(1989년 창간)'이 공전의 히트를 쳤다. 발행부수 면에서 주간신문 역사상 최고였다.
필자는 당시 토요신문의 편집국장으로 1992년 12.18 대선을 치렀다. 그 때만해도 주간신문들은 민주화 노선의 선봉에 섰었다. 김영삼-김대중 민주화 투사들의 연이은 대통령 당선에도 한몫 했다.
주간신문 신문의 판매가 늘면서 신문가판 업계에서는 판매전쟁이 일어났다. 이때 서울 가판업계에서는 김연호씨, 부산 가판업계에서는 이상순씨가 두각을 나타냈다. 신문을 팔아서 이익을 남긴 측면도 있었다. 하지만, 필자는 그분들이 가판신문 업계를 점령, 민주적인 노선의 주간신문들을 대중에게 대량 보급-대량 전달함으로써 대한민국의 민주주의 정착을 앞당기는데 기여했다고 평가한다.
주간신문을 무시했던 분들은 필자같은 주간신문 기자를 '신문쟁이'라고 했고, 가판에서 신문을 판매하는 분들은 '신문팔이'라고 호칭했다.
필자가 발행인으로 있는 '주간현대'와 '사건의 내막'도 신문 가판시장에서 불티나게 팔렸었는데, 위 두분의 공헌이 컸었다.
3월13일, 부산지역의 가판 신문판매의 신화적 인물이었던 이상순 선생(72세)의 사망소식을 전해 들었다. 부산 수장례식장에서 장례(발인 3월15일)가 진행된다고 한다. 명복을 빈다. 두 분은 결코 ‘신문팔이’로 저평가되는 인생을 산 게 아니었다. 부디, 저 세상에 가셔서도 대한민국의 민주적인 발전에 헌신하시기를 빈다. 서울 가판 신문 판매의 신화적 인물이었던 김연호 선생은 미국 LA에서 거주하다가, 수년전 유명을 달리했다. 차제에 두 분의 명복을 더불어-함께 빈다. moonilsuk@naver.com

[Audience] Goodbye to the world, Mr. Sang-soon Lee, the hero of the newsstand industry in Busan.

In Syngman Rhee's regime, the weekly newspaper was a prosperous period. More than 600 weekly newspapers have been published. In 1961, a 5.16 military coup led by General Park Chung-hee took place. The Park Chung-hee military regime abolished the weekly newspaper. In order to publish weekly newspapers, a wicked law was created that required the installation of a rotary press, and the weekly newspapers had to be destroyed overnight. Because of this, the weekly newspaper has become an accessory of daily newspapers with a rotary press.
It was only during the Roh Tae-woo regime that wassuance became somewhat free. The first independent weekly newspaper since 1961, the Saturday Shinmun (founded in 1989), was a hit of all time. It was the best in the history of the weekly newspaper in terms of number of copies.
At the time, I was the editor-in-chief of the Saturday Newspaper and held the 12.18 presidential election in 1992. At that time, weekly newspapers were at the forefront of the democratization line. Kim Young-sam and Kim Dae-jung also played a part in the successive presidential elections of democratic fighters.
As the sales of weekly newspapers increased, a sales war broke out in the newsstand industry. At this time, Kim Yeon-ho stood out in the Seoul marketplace, and Lee Sang-soon in the Busan marketplace. There was also the aspect of making profits by selling newspapers. However, I evaluate that they have contributed to the rapid settlement of democracy in Korea by occupying the newsstand industry and delivering democratic weekly newspapers to the public in large quantities.
Those who ignored the weekly newspaper referred to a weekly reporter like me as a'newsman', and those who sold newspapers at the newsstand called'newspaper sales'.
'Weekly Hyundai' and'The Intent of the Case', which I am the publisher of, were also sold on fire at the newsstand market, but the contributions of the two were great.
On March 13, we heard the news of the death of Sang-soon Lee, 72, who was a mythical figure in the newsstand in Busan. It is said that his funeral (born March 15) will be held at the Busan Water Funeral Home. Good luck. The two of them never lived a life that was undervalued as “newspaper arms”. By all means, I wish you dedication to the democratic development of the Republic of Korea even in the other world.
