한중도시우호협회(회장 권기식)측은 2일자 보도자료를 통해 “곽영훈 세계시민기구(WCO) 총재를 고문으로 위촉했다. 권기식 회장은 이날 오전 서울 중구 신당동 세계시민기구 사무실에서 고문 위촉식을 갖고 실크로드 시장 회의 한국 개최와 한중수교 30주년 기념사업 등을 협의했다”고 알리고 “대한민국 국토개발의 선구자이자 국제적으로 명망이 높은 곽영훈 총재를 협회 고문으로 모시게 됨으로써 중국을 포함한 실크로드 도시들과의 교류협력이 더욱 활발해질 것으로 기대한다"고 말했다.
곽영훈 총재는 지난 1962년 경기고 학생 시절 반기문 전 유엔 사무총장과 함께 미국의 초청으로 워싱턴을 방문해 존 F 케네디 당시 미국 대통령을 면담했다. 이후 MIT공대 건축학과와 하버드대학교 교육대학원을 졸업한 뒤 귀국해 '사람과 환경그룹'을 설립하고 서울 지하철, 인천국제공항, 대학로, 대덕연구단지, 일산신도시 등 주요 국가 기간 국토개발사업에 주도적으로 참여했다. 또 실크로드연맹 의장을 맡아 지난 2013년 여수시에서 '제 8회 실크로드 시장단 포럼'을 개최하는 등 세계평화운동에 앞장서왔다.

President Kwak Young-hoon visited Washington at the invitation of the United States with former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon when he was a student at Gyeonggi High School in 1962 to meet with then-US President John F. Kennedy. After graduating from the Department of Architecture at the MIT College of Engineering and the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University, he returned to Korea to establish the 'People and Environment Group' and took the lead in major national land development projects such as Seoul Subway, Incheon International Airport, Daehangno, Daedeok Research Complex, and Ilsan New Town. participated as He also served as the chairman of the Silk Road Federation, and has been at the forefront of the world peace movement by holding the '8th Silk Road Mayor's Forum' in Yeosu in 2013.
