한국은 부자 나라가 됐다. 이젠 세계10대 경제 선진(先進)국가이다. 문화도 선진국가인가에 대한 의문은 뒤따른다. 고민이 필요하다.
대한민국이 경제 선진국가에 진입하면서 종교적으로도 내면(內面)갈등이 증폭되는 양상이다.
올해 들어 SNS(사회 관계망 서비스)상에 어느 수녀가 썼다는 글이 스마트폰을 통해 널리 전파됐다. 필자도 이 글을 읽게 됐다. 한국 가톨릭교회(천주교회)의 내부를 비판하는 내용이다.
SNS로 전파되고 있는 글은 A수녀라는 이름을 단 글이지만, 말미 부분(정치 언급 부분)은 제3자가 덧붙여 쓴 글이 첨가되어 있는 듯하다. 그러나 한국 가톨릭 수도자들 세계의 각성을 촉구하는 내용이란 점에서 관심을 끈다.
이 글은 “나는 더 이상은 정의를 외면한 사랑을 신뢰할 수 없다”는 말로 시작된다. 이어 “양들이 사지(死地)로 내몰리고 있는 처절한 상황 앞에서도 눈귀 입을 닫은 목자들을 결코 신뢰할 수 없다. 처자식 먹여 살리기 위해서 직장 상사에게 굴욕을 당해 본 적도 없고, 자기방 청소며, 자신의 옷 빨래며,,, 자신이 먹을 밥 한번 끓여 먹으려고 물에 손 한번 담가 본적이라곤 없는 가톨릭의 추기경, 주교, 사제와 수도자들의 고결하고 영성적인 말씀들이 가슴에 와 닿을 리가 없다”고 전제하고 “언제부터인지 우리 교회에는 가난한 사람들의 권리 보호를 외면하고, 제도 교회의 사리사욕에만 몰두하는 목자 아닌 관리자들이 득실거린다. 고급 승용차, 고급 음식, 골프, 성지순례 해외여행에 유유자적(悠悠自適) 하면서 부자들의 친구가 되고, 그들 자신이 부자이며 특권층이 되어버린 그토록 많은 성직자, 수도자들의 모습이 아름다울 리가 없다. 주교 문장에 쓰인 멋스러운 모토와 그들의 화려한 복장 가슴 위의 빛나는 십자가를 수난과 처참한 죽음의 예수님의 십자가와 도무지 연결할 재간이 없다”라고, 고뇌어린 내용이 이어진다.
이 글은 수도원에 불어닥친 물질주의의 오염을 걱정하고 있다. “나날이 늘어나는 뱃살 걱정이며 지나치게 기름진 그들의 미소와 생존의 싸움에 지쳐있는 사람들과는 대체 무슨 상관관계가 있는 것일까? 또한 가난을 서원한 수도자들 역시 그리 가난하지가 않다. 수도원에서는 아무도 의식주를 걱정하지 않는다. 안정된 공간에서 해주는 밥을 얻어먹으면서 최소한의 노동으로 최대한의 대접을 받고 산다. 어딜 가도 수녀님, 수녀님 하면서 콩나물 값이라도 깎아주려는 고마운 분들 속에서 고마운 줄 모르고 덥석덥석 받는 일에 전문가가 되어간다”고, 지적 했다.
또한 “말만 복음을 쏟아 놓았지 몸은 복음을 알지 못하는 ‘실천적 무신론자’들이며, 아기를 낳아보고, 남편 자식 때문에 속 썩고, 시댁 친정 식구들에게 시달리며 인내와 희생을 해본 적이라곤 없는 탓에 철딱서니 없는 과년한 유아들이 없지 않다”면서 “수도복 입었다고 행세할 무엇이 있었던가? 본인이 원해서 하는 독신생활에 자랑할 무엇이 있었던가? 하느님 나라를 위해서 겸손하게 봉사하지 않고, 하느님의 뜻에 순명하지 않는다면 수도복과 수도 생활, 독신생활조차 그 의미가 희석된다. 교구, 본당, 수도회의 일이 너무 바쁜 나머지 세상일에 눈을 돌릴 수 없다고 변명하고 책임회피 할 수가 있는 것일까? 인간의 생명이 함부로 훼손되고, 사회적 약자들이 실의와 도탄에 빠진 이 나라 정치 사회의 불의를 향해 단호하게 저항해야 마땅한 일이 아닌가? 수도자들이라도 결집하여 그래서는 안 된다고 외쳐야 하지 않을까?”라고 호소하고 있다.
이 글의 마지막 부분은 “수도자들이라도 용기 있는 발걸음을 내딛고 목소리를 내야 하지 않을까? 종교계가 소름 끼치도록 조용하다. 이것은 무얼 뜻하는 걸까? 나 역시 작은 수녀에 불과하고 비겁하며 합리화하고 회피하고도 싶다. 내가 비판한 사람들 못지않게 비판받을 행동을 하고 있다는 뼈아픈 자의식으로 인해 차라리 그 모든 것에서 물러나서 침묵을 택하고도 싶다. 그러나, 그러나 시간이 그리 많아 보이지 않는다. 더 이상 미룰 수 없는 일처럼 보인다. 이 시대의 한국인들은 첨단 물질문명시대를 살고 있다. 가난을 극복한 국민으로서 첨단 시대를 살아가고 있다. 이 수도자의 고민-고뇌는 어쩌면 모든 국민들의 고뇌일지 모른다. “수난과 처참한 죽음의 예수님의 십자가와 도무지 연결할 재간이 없다”라고 지적한 내용은 수도인 자신에게 묻는 처절한 질문이다.
