무상급식을 일부 또는 전혀 시행하지않는 상황에서 무상급식을 추진하면, 연간 추가 예산은 대구 197억 원, 경북 112억 원이다.
대구와 경북은 전국에서 가장 늦게 고등학교 무상급식을 실시한데 이어 유치원 무상급식 역시 타지자체에 비해 다소 느리게 추진하고 있는 것으로 확인되면서 비판을 피하지 못할 것으로 예상된다.
앞서 대구시교육청은 유치원 무상급식 실시에 대해 “기존 시행하고 있는 초중고 무상급식과 더불어 매년 많은 재원이 소요되어 교육청 단독으로 시행하기 어렵다”면서 “대구시와 기초자치단체인 구군의 협조가 필요한 사안으로 이를 위해 대구시와 교육행정협의회를 통해 지속적인 협의를 해나가겠다”고 밝힌 바 있다.
