살아남으려면, 이 세상에서 하나뿐인 그 무엇? 그 무엇을 찾아내야 합니다. 이 세상에서 하나뿐인 그 무엇을 위한 묵상...37년 간 서울의 거리에서 그림을 그려온 이흥로 화가(화실=서울시 용산구 삼각지)를 찾아 나섰다.
이흥로 화가는 최근 자신의 페이스북에 과거를 회상하는 글을 올렸다. 그는 서울거리의 거리화가를 자처했다. 파리의 몽마르트 거리에는 거리에서 얼굴사진 등 그림을 그려주는 화가들이 많다. 한국에도 그런 미술가 문화를 만들고 싶어 했다.
그는 이 글에서 “내가 거리미술을 시작한 것은 1985년 대학로 개통 때부터이다. 당시에는 따라주는 화가들도 거의 없었고 시민들의 의식도 미미해 어려움 속을 헤매다가 거리 미술이라는 것이 인식되고 활성화되기 시작한 것은 한참이 지난 1990년대 초-중반께부터”라고 설명하면서 “그 후 20-30여년이 넘게 나를 따라 나와함께 고난을 같이하던 수많은 후배 화가들이 그 어려운 거리미술 활동을 하면서도 틈을 내어 대학원 공부도 더 하고 작품전도 열며 작가의 길로 성장하여 떠나가는 걸 보면서 작지 않은 보람과 흐뭇한 성취감도 느껴왔었다”고 회고했다.

이흥로 화가는 “이제 코로나19에 시달리는 혹독하고 살벌한 시대를 맞아 거리화가들의 세계에도 큰 위기가 온 것 같다. 값싼 그림을 그려주며 얻어지는 작은 수입으로 공부도 하고 작품 활동도 하면서 어려운 살림에 보태어 오기도 했었다. 그 나마의 작은 수입원이 돼주던 활동터전마저 잃어버린 거리화가들의 어려움과 그에 따른 생활고가 눈에 보이듯 선하다. 어떤 후배 화가는 택배 일을 시작했다는 소식도 들린다. 또는 무슨 장사를 시작했다는 소리도 들린다. 어떤 후배 화가는 시골로 들어가 고구마 농사에 배추농사를 했다고 하기에 약간의 도움이 될까 해서 한 묶음씩 팔아주기 했었다”고 털어놨다.
이흥로 화가는 이글은 끝부분에서 “이제야 말로 하루빨리 코로나 사태가 진정되어서 옛날과 같은 거리미술 퍼포먼스가 다시 활성화되어 어려움 속에 시달리던 후배 화가들이 활동할 수 있는 마당이 열렸으면 한다. 어둡던 얼굴에 환하고 희망찬 웃음이 되살아나는 날이 오는 걸 빨리 보고 싶다”고 덧붙였다.
