지난 7회 지방선거에서 불어온 문풍과 국민의힘 후보간의 분열로 창원시 최초로 민주당 출신의 창원시장을 배출한 더불어 민주당은 일찌감치 허성무 창원시장을 단독 후보로 내정하고 결속력을 다져왔다.
