토당초등학교 4학년 학생들은 학교 주변의 환경문제에 대한 토의를 통해 고양시장에게 제안하고 싶은 개선사항들을 정리, ‘고양시장님, 제안할게 있어요’를 지난달 20일 인수위원회에 전달했다.

이동환 고양시장은 직접 쓴 손편지로 전달받은 제안사항에 감명 받아 지난달 23일 토당초등학교에 직접 방문, 학생들의 설명을 듣고 취임 직후 제안 사항을 해결할 것을 약속했다.
토당초등학교 학생들의 제안 내용은 ‘학교 주변 환경개선 프로젝트’로, ▲학교 앞 버스정류장 쓰레기통 설치 ▲횡단보도 신규 설치 ▲학교 후문 옆 토당1근린공원 사업지의 위험 수목 및 노후 안전펜스, 간판 제거 ▲무단경작 및 불법주차 방지 등이다.
덕양구청은 토당초등학교 학생들의 제안사항을 적극 검토하고 반영, 깨끗하고 안전한 학교 주변 환경을 조성하기 위해 노력하고 있다.

토당초등학교 후문 횡단보도 설치는 고양경찰서 해당 부서에 심의 상정을 요청한 상태로, 심의 절차를 통해 인근 교통 환경에 적합한 지 확인 후 설치를 결정할 예정이다.
토당초등학교 인근에 들어서는 토당1근린공원은 오는 2023년 착공 예정으로, 부지 내 각종 위험물과 무단경작 등의 문제가 있어 학교 주변 환경을 해치고 있다고 지적됐다.
시는 사업부서와 협의를 통해 공원 부지 내 위험 수목과 안전펜스 및 간판을 제거하고, 무단경작과 불법주차 등을 방지하기 위한 계도 활동을 이어갈 예정이다.

위험수목은 이달 내로, 지주간판은 내달까지 철거할 예정이며, 안전펜스는 9월까지 부지 내 건축물 철거와 함께 진행할 계획이다.
또, 우범지대로 우려되는 학교 인근 폐가는 9월까지 철거를 진행하고 주변 환경을 정리할 예정이다.
