윤석열 대통령이 대선 후보 시절 이같이 말하며 내세운 '광주광역시 복합쇼핑몰 유치' 공약이 현실화된다.
현대백화점그룹은 광주광역시 도심에 대규모 미래형 문화복합몰 '더현대 광주(가칭)'를 추진하겠다고 밝혔다.
특히 '여의도 더현대 서울'을 능가하는 규모로 건설하겠다는 계획이다.
현대백화점그룹은 6일 부동산 개발 기업 '휴먼스홀딩스제1차PFV'와 광주광역시 북구 일대 옛 전남방직·일신방직 공장 부지 31만㎡에 '더현대 광주' 출점을 위한 협의를 진행 중이라고 밝혔다.
점포 규모는 현재 논의 중이나 '대형 복합쇼핑몰'이라는 타이틀에 걸맞게 대규모로 지어질 예정이다. 더현대 광주가 들어선다면 광주광역시 상권을 아우르는 핵심 쇼핑시설로 자리잡을 전망이다.
더현대 광주는 현지 법인화를 통해 독립 경영을 하며 지역 협력 업체 육성과 인재 채용 등 지역경제 활성화에도 기여할 방침이다. 이 복합몰이 개장하면 약 2만2000명의 고용 효과가 있을 것으로 추산하고 있다.
휴먼스홀딩스제1차PFV는 '더현대 광주' 외에 엔터테인먼트형 쇼핑몰, 국제 규모 특급호텔, 프리미엄 영화관 등도 추가 유치할 예정이다.
기아타이거즈 홈구장인 광주기아챔피언스필드와 연계한 '야구인의 거리' 조성 및 방직 산업 문화유산을 중심으로 한 '역사문화 공원' 조성도 계획 중이다.
현대백화점그룹 관계자는 "'더현대 광주'는 서울 여의도 '더현대 서울'이 보여준 차별화된 공간 기획과 브랜드 구성 능력을 한 차원 더 끌어올릴 것"이라며 "50년이 넘는 현대백화점그룹의 유통 역량과 노하우를 결집해 다양한 문화 체험 콘텐츠를 추가하면 호남지역 최고의 복합 문화 공간이 될 것"이라고 말했다.
