한국의 개신교단 역사 가운데는 ‘경이적인 신도세 증가’를 보인 교단이 있어왔다. 서울 여의도 순복음교회는 세계 단일교회로서는 최대의 교회로 자리매김 됐었다. 순복음교회는 고 조용기 목사가 1956년 순복음신학교에 입학하면서부터 시작됐다.

그런데 서울 여의도순복음교회와 비슷하게 교세가 폭발성장을 하는 교단이 대한민국에서 또 하나 생겨났다. 신천지예수교 증거장막성전(약칭=신천지 예수교회)이 바로 그 교단이다. 이만희 총회장이 이끄는 신천지예수교회는 지난 1984년에 창립했다. 이 교단은 지난 2019년에 전 세계 성도를 20여만 명 정도라고 발표했다. 그 후 성도가 급증, 확장되는 추세를 보여주고 있다.
신천지예수교회의 지난 7월6일자 보도자료에 따르면, 올 1월부터 6월까지 시온기독교선교센터의 신규 등록 수강생은 10만 명을 넘어섰다고 한다. 시온기독교선교센터는 매년 2만여 명의 수료생을 배출하며 지속적으로 성장해 왔다. 지난 2019년, 그해 한 해 동안 10만 명 이상의 수료생을 배출, 기하급수적 성장의 토대를 마련한 것으로 자평했다. 신천지예수교회측은 현재 성도 수를 30만명으로 발표하고 있다. 올 연말쯤이면 40만 명으로 늘어날 것으로 추산하고 있다.
신천지예수교회측은 “신천지예수교회가 운영하는 시온기독교선교센터에서 올 상반기에만 10만 명 이상 등록한 것으로 확인됐다. 이에 따라 올 연말 시온기독교선교센터 수료식에서 세계 최대 규모라고 할 수 있는 10만 명 수료생 배출이 예상된다. 올해 상반기 구체적인 수강생 숫자를 보면 국내 총 9만 1천여 명, 해외 3만 5천 명이며, 7월 6일 현재 수강자는 10만 5천여 명이다. 특히 신학생, 목회자의 수강 등록수가 지난해에 비해 크게 증가했다”면서 “올 연말 시온기독교선교센터 수료식에서 세계 최대 규모라고 할 수 있는 10만 명 수료생 배출이 예상된다”고 전했다. “시온기독교선교센터 수료생 10만 명 배출”이란, 그만큼 신도가 늘어나고 있다는 것을 의미한다.

신천지예수교회의 한 관계자는 “지난 2년 동안 어려운 일도 겪었지만 하나님을 의지하고 오직 말씀과 복음전파를 생각하며 대대적인 변화를 이뤄낼 수 있었다. 그 결과 전 세계에서 유일하게 성장할 수 있었던 것"이라고 밝히면서 “현재 흐름대로라면 올해 10만 명 수료생 배출도 가능할 것 같다. 유례없는 성장이지만 흔들림 없이 종교의 본질과 신앙인 본분에 충실한 참 종교가 되도록 오직 예수님만 바라보며 걸어가겠다”고 강조했다.
