브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 배현진 국민의힘 최고위원은 29일 최고위원직 사퇴를 발표했다.
배현진 최고위원은 이날 오전 국회 본관에서 최고위원회의 직후 기자들과 만나 "윤석열 정부가 지난 5월 출범한 이후 국민께서 많은 기대와 희망으로 잘해보라는 바람을 심어주셨는데 80여 일이 되도록 속 시원한 모습으로 국민들께 기대감을 충족시키지 못한 것 같다"고 밝혔다.
이어 "그는 국민의 기대감을 충족하지 못한 것은 통감하며 책임지는 모습을 보이기 위해 저는 오늘 부로 최고위원직에서 사퇴한다"며 "국민의힘 국회의원 한 사람으로, 전직 당 지도부 일원으로 다시 제자리로 돌아가겠다"고 말했다.
배 최고위원은 "이번 지도부는 새로운 정부 출범과 새로운 대한민국에 대한 뜨거운 열망을 가지신 국민들이 새 대통령을 탄생시키라는 지엄한 명령을 주셨고, 지난 1년간 분초를 다퉈가며 선거에 임했다"며 "감사하게도 새 정부와 지방선거 승리라는 감사한 선물과 기회를 당에 안겨주셨다"고 말했다.
그러면서 "그 기회를 100%도 만족스럽게 충족시키지 못했던 부분에 대해 너무 죄송하게 생각한다"며 "마땅히 책임져야 하고 끊어내야 할 것을 제때 끊어내지 못하면 더 큰 혼란을 초래한다. 저 개인이 지도부 일원으로서 책임지는 모습도 보여드려야 할 때"라고 강조했다.
그는 아울러 "당 지도부 한 사람으로서 그간 많은 애정과 열정으로 지적해주셨던 국민과 당원께 굉장히 송구하고 많은 말씀에 깊이 통감하고 있다"며 "새로운 윤석열 정부 동력을 실어 가며 거듭나는 모습을 보여드리기 위해 뒤에서 묵묵히 최선을 다하겠다"고 밝혔다.
