브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 국민의힘은 7일 새 비상대책위원장으로 당내 최다선인 5선 의원 정진석 국회 부의장을 추대했다.
권성동 원내대표는 이날 국회에서 의원총회를 마친 뒤 기자들과 만나 "차기 비대위원장으로 정진석 부의장을 모시기로 의총에서 결정했다"고 밝혔다.
권성동 원내대표는 "이번에 새 비대위장 후보를 물색할 당시 제일 처음 떠오른 게 정진석 부의장이었다"며 "정 부의장이 여러 이유를 대면서 고사해 외부로 방향을 돌렸는데, 접촉한 외부 인사께서 우리 당에 대해 잘 모른다고 했다. 잘 모르는 당에 와서 비대위장을 하는 건 적절치 않다는 이유로 완강하게 고사했다"고 설명했다.
이어 그는 "그래서 오늘 다시 정 부의장과 통화하고 세 번이나 찾아가서 설득했다"며 "당 원내대표도 역임했고 의원들 신임을 받아 부의장까지 하고 계시니 당이 가장 어려울 때 좀 도와주셔야 한다, 책임져야 한다고 계속해서 설득했다"고 말했다.
그는 "그랬더니 4년 동안 끊었던 담배도 피우면서 처음에는 완강하게 거절하다가 조금 전 세번째 찾아갔더니 마지막에 승낙해줬다"고 했다.
권 원내대표는 4선 의원에 국회 부의장을 지낸 박주선 전 의원에게도 비대위원장직을 제안하지도 했지만 결국 최종 고사한 것으로 전해졌다. 박주선 전 의원측은 언론과의 인터뷰에서 "박주선 전 의원은 호남에서 4선 의원을 지냈는데 보수 정당 대표로 가기엔 아무래도 부담"이라며 "당내 기반도 없는데 몇개월짜리 비대위원장의 발언이 당내서 통하겠느냐"고 거절 이유를 전했다.
