자연 친화적인 농업과 생활을 추구하는 돌나라 한농복구회 회원이기도 한 이창숙 씨는 유난히 꽃을 좋아해서 2004년도에 압화(押花)와 인연을 맺었다. 압화(押花)는 아름다운 꽃과 잎사귀 등을 눌러 건조시킨 뒤 생화 소품 등에 이용하거나 작품을 만드는 조형예술로 ‘꽃 누르미’, ‘누름 꽃’으로도 불리지만 보통 압화(押花) 라고 부른다.
평소 압화(押花)에 대한 남다른 애정으로 독창적인 드로잉을 다양한 장르에 접목시키며 지속적 활동과 양질의 작품 창작 활동을 하고 있는 작가를 만나기 위해 필자는 상주시 외서면 돌나라 오아시스 체험마을 내에 위치한 한의원을 찾았다.

한의원 표지판이 걸려 있는 앞마당에 들어서니 산야초와 야생화에 관심이 많은 남편과 함께 꾸며 놓은 ‘야생화 동산’이 있었다. 주위 경관은 온통 자연이 준 가장 아름다운 선물인 꽃들과 각종 식물들로 가득 차 있어 압화(押花)를 하기에는 최고의 환경인 것 같았다.
이 작가는 평소에는 원장인 남편을 도와 환자들을 간호하며 돌나라 한농마을에 유기농 견학을 오는 도시민들에게 돌나라 오아시스 교육관에 손수 만든 작품을 전시하여 힐링의 기회를 제공한다. 또한 경북 지역 어르신들 실버교육으로 압화(押花) 기초강의(부채, 조명 등 만들기)를 교육하는 등 지역사회 활동에 동참하며 꾸준히 작품 활동을 이어가고 있었다.

돌나라 이창숙 작가는 ‘제13회 대한민국압화(押花)대전’에서 야생화의 다양한 모습을 판화형식으로 제작해 압화(押花) 예술의 새로운 장르를 보여주는 ‘야생화의 외출’ 작품으로 대통령상과 그 외로 다양한 상을 수상했었다.

‘야생화 46개 표본’ 작품은 애기붓꽃, 꼬리풀, 대나무꽃, 금꿩애다리꽃, 사상자꽃, 사초꽃, 포천석창포, 자주쓴풀, 강아지풀, 대극, 산앵두, 홀아비꽃대, 양지꽃, 노루귀, 복수초, 산자고, 금낭화, 할미꽃, 꿩의 바람, 붉은인동초, 봄맞이, 애기말발도리, 나비수국, 새신, 족두리풀꽃... 등 46가지 야생화를 이용해 완성한 작품이다.

‘이끼계곡’ 작품은 사진을 보고 밑그림을 그린 다음 원본보고 오려서 돌 하나하나에 나무껍질을 오려 붙이고 진짜 이끼를 씌워서 음양을 수작업으로 하고 섬세하게 색깔과 조명을 맞춰 이끼계곡을 전부 나뭇잎으로 가득 채웠다. 안보여서 그렇지 자세히 들여다보면 나뭇잎 마다 이끼를 입히고 폭포수는 솜으로 표현한 많은 시간을 투자해 완성한 작품이다.
