이에 따라 지난해 12월 고시한 제4차 항만배후단지개발 종합계획 상 부족한 항만배후단지의 내륙부지 지정 필요성이 반영됨에 따라 진해신항 9선석을 개장하는 2029년까지 인근 내륙부지에 배후단지를 조성하기 위해 창원형 항만배후단지 개발방식과 후보지 검토, 시행자 구성 등에 대한 사업 시행방안 연구를 창원시정연구원에서 수행할 계획이다.
이후 연구 결과를 바탕으로 경남도와 세부적인 일정 및 개발계획 수립을 위한 협의를 진행할 예정이며, 이와 함께 진해신항과 연계 가능한 경제자유구역 개발지구 확대에 대한 내용도 적극 논의할 계획이다.
