따라서 반몽도 하고 민심도 얻으려면 반몽이 투철한 종친을 왕으로 세워야 했다. 그가 누굴까? 고심 끝에 임연은 고종이 승하한 날 김준도 왕으로 염두에 두었던 인물, 바로 원종의 동생 안경공 창을 생각해 냈다.
다음 날 일찍이 임연이 문무백관을 소집령 했다.
“오늘 밤 모두 안경공 창의 집에 모여라.”
그날 밤 문무백관이 모이자 임연이 갑옷을 입고 군사를 대동해 나타났다 그 옆에 안경공 창을 세우고 백관에게 외쳤다.
“모두 따라 하시오. 왕창 전하 만세, 만세, 만만세!”
아닌 밤중에 홍두깨라고, 백관은 물론 안경공 창까지도 황당해 어쩔 줄 몰라 했다. 하지만 임연은 벌침처럼 좌중을 쏘아 보며 다그쳤다.
“만일 따라 하지 않으면 모두 죽여 버리겠다!”
그제야 백관들도 마지못해 만세를 불렀다.
“됐다. 여봐라, 어서 전하를 대궐로 모셔라.”
새파랗게 질린 안경공 창이 병사의 부축을 받고 가마에 올랐다. 그렇게 해서 안경공 창이 용상에 앉았다.
그 시각 임연의 지시를 받은 좌부승선 이창경(李昌慶)이 진암궁(辰巖宮)에서 잠자고 있던 있던 원종을 내쫓았다.
원종은 홀로 궁궐을 나서 싸락눈이 쌓인 길에 몇번이나 미끄러지며 김애(金皚)의 폐가로 가야만 했다. 그 뒷 모습을 임연과 아들 임유무(林惟茂)의 장인 이응렬(李應烈)이 함께 지켜보았다. 임연이 박장대소했다.
“하하하, 통쾌하다. 감히 나를 토사구팽하려 들다니. 고얀놈.”
이응렬은 한술 더 떴다. 기쁨에 들떠 휘파람까지 불며 원종을 놀렸다.
“야, 왕식(王植)아. 어디 용손이 너 하나뿐이더냐? 넋 빠진 놈 같으니라고..”
왕식은 원종의 이름이다. 태자 시절의 이름은 왕전이었는데, 왕위에 오른 뒤 왕식으로 바꾸었던 것이다.
