[브레이크뉴스=정철규 기자] 진주시가 2019년부터 부강진주 3대 프로젝트 중 하나인 옛 진주역 철도부지 재생프로젝트를 추진해 온 가운데 지난해 옛 진주역 사거리 광장, 소망의 거리 조성을 완료하고 일호광장 진주역을 개관하면서 프로젝트의 가시적인 성과를 거뒀다.
이와 함께 프로젝트 1단계로 추진해 온 ‘철도문화공원’ 조성 사업이 5월말 준공을 앞두고 있다.
옛 진주역 철도부지 일원은 진주역이 가좌동으로 이전된 이후 원도심의 노후화를 가속화하고 생활환경을 저해하는 시설로 전락했다.
이에 진주시는 철도부지와 시설을 활용한 문화·예술의 거점을 마련하기 위해 프로젝트 1단계 사업으로 철도문화공원 조성 사업을 추진해 왔다.
철도문화공원 조성 사업은 480억원의 예산으로 4만2000㎡의 철도부지와 옛 진주역사, 국가등록문화재 제202호인 진주역 차량정비고 전차대 등의 철도시설을 활용해 문화·예술의 거점 공원을 조성하는 사업이다.
2020년 12월에 국토부 도시재생 인정사업 공모에 선정되어 국·도비 60억원을 지원받았고 선행 사업으로 옛 진주역사 리모델링을 완료해 ‘일호광장 진주역’이라는 새 이름으로 재탄생시켜 지역민의 추억을 소환하는 장소로 만들었다.

또한 진주시는 철도문화공원의 이미지 제고를 위해 올해 3월 한국철도공사에서 매입한 무궁화호 객차 2량을 공원에 설치하고 전시, 여가, 체험이 가능한 공간으로 조성하기 위해 리모델링을 계획 중이다.
