한국자유총연맹(총재 강석호, 이하 연맹)은 5월3일자 보도자료에서 “5월 3일 오후 4시, 서울 광화문 동화면세점 앞에서 각계 관계자와 시민, 학생 등 300여 명이 참석한 가운데 ‘마약 범죄 실태’에 관한 자유민주주의와 국가안보 대국민 토론회를 개최했다”고 밝혔다.
토론회는 ‘프리한 엄마들의 우리 아이 지키기 -마약편-’을 부제로 박영덕 마약퇴치운동본부 재활센터장, 김일옥 삼육대학교 간호대학 교수의 주제발표, 질의응답, 시민발언 등의 순으로 진행됐다.
박영덕 마약퇴치운동본부 재활센터장은 주제 발표를 통해 “마약중독은 신속한 재활치료 기회 제공이 중요하다”라며, “무엇보다 마약 공급 차단과 수요억제 정책 마련이 필요하다”라고 강조했다. 김일옥 삼육대학교 간호대학 교수는 “마약 청정국이었던 대한민국에 마약 범죄가 성행하게 된 것은 매우 불행한 일”이라며, “불법 마약류를 시급히 퇴치해 마약 폐해 없는 선진 대한민국 사회를 조성해야 한다”라고 강조했다.
