19일 울진군(군수 손병복)에 따르면 군은 지난 4월 제61회 경북도민체육대회를 개최하면서 선수들의 경기력을 향상시키기 위해 울진종합운동장 트랙을 전면 교체했다.
그 덕분에 도민체전을 성공적으로 치렀을 뿐만 아니라 대한육상연맹으로부터 제2종 육상경기장으로 공인인증을 받았다. 2종 공인 경기장은 도민체전과 전국규모대회, 국제 친선대회 등을 개최할 수 있는 경기장이다.
이에 군은 한 단계 더 나아가 W.A(세계육상연맹)의 국제공인(Class-2)을 신청해 까다로운 검증 과정을 거쳐 7월 최종 승인을 받았다. 이로써 울진종합운동장은 세계육상연맹이 공인하는 각종 국제대회 경기용으로 운영될 수 있게 됐다.
이번에 교체한 트랙은 세계신기록이 인정되는 트랙으로, 기존의 시트형(합성 시트 아스콘 부착) 방식에서 액상형(우레탄 수지 현장 배합 포설) 방식으로 전면 개보수되었다.
뿐만 아니라 항구성과 내구성, 중금속이 없는 친환경성을 강화했으며, 기존의 녹색과 적색 중심의 트랙선을 청색과 회색으로 전환해 선수들에게는 집중도를 높이고 관람객들에게는 눈의 피로감을 덜어 주는 환경을 조성했다.
울진군은 앞으로 경북 도내 군 단위 지자체에서는 유일하게 전국체전 수준의 경기와 세계(아시아권)대회를 유치할 수 있게 됐다. 대회 시 참가하는 선수들의 대회 기록 경신은 물론 자긍심을 올리는데 한몫할 것으로 군은 기대하고 있다.
또한, 군은 민선8기 전략사업인 관광객 1,000만 시대 준비를 위해 스포츠마케팅에 더욱 적극적으로 나서 지역경제 활성화에도 이바지한다는 계획이다.
손병복 울진군수는“이번 인증을 통해 천혜의 자연환경과 다양한 스포츠 기반 시설을 보유한 스포츠 전지훈련의 메카로 도약하는데 더욱 노력하겠다”며 “국제·전국·도 단위 육상대회 유치를 위해서도 더욱 박차를 가하겠다”고 전했다.
