한반도는 1950년-1953년, 3년간 민족 내전을 치렀다. 이 전쟁에서 몸으로 체험한 것은 적(敵)을 죽이지 않으면 내가 죽는다는 사실이다. 전후(戰後) 지금까지도 이러한 전쟁심리의 영향권에서 살았다. 대중(大衆)이 안심입명을 찾던 시기에 신흥(新興)종교들이 다수 출현했다. 더러는 이 교단-종단 안에서 평안을 찾았다. 기성종교들은 이 신흥종교를 포용하기 보다는 배타적인 자세를 취했다. 신흥종교를 사이비시하는 경향이 사회 내부에 존재해왔다.
2023년 오늘날의 대한민국은 경제적으로 세계 상위국에 진입돼 있다. 한국은 세계적인 주류 국가이고, 한국인은 세계 속에서 존경 받는 국가의 시민(市民)이 됐다. 한국인들이 세계 그 어디를 가든, 존경과 대우를 받는 시민인 된 것이다.
한국인들은 이쯤해서, 새로운 그 문화에 대한 시각 조종(操縱)이 필요한 시기가 됐다. 한국인들이 만든 문화가 새롭다는 것은 창조적이라는 뜻이고, 창조적이라 함은 세계적이라는 말과 통할 수도 있다. 한국인들이 만들어낸 종교 역시 그런 대우를 받아야 한다는 의미이다.
근래, 기독교복음선교회(일명 JMS) 정명석 목사의 준(準)강간 혐의에 대한 재판과정에서 그를 향한 비난이 거세다. 비판을 받아야할 확신한 팩트(사실)이 있다면 비판을 받는 게 옳다. 그러나 사실과 동떨어지게 왜곡-과다하게 비판하는 것은 국익(國益)을 훼손하는 일일 수 있다.
필자는 그런 의미에서 JMS 정명석 목사 사건을 주시해왔고, 이와 관련된 칼럼을 여러 편 써왔다.
종교 간 갈등이 있는 사회는 불행하다. 중동의 오늘날이 증거 해주고 있다.
대한민국의 경제력은 세계 상위 수준이 됐다. 대한민국은 잘 사는 국가가 된 것이다. 한국인들이 창조적으로 추진해온 연예-공연 문화사업들은 세계적이 돼 가고 있다. 각광을 받고 있다. 종교 문화도 마찬가지라고 생각한다. 한국 산(産) 신흥종교들은 전쟁을 치른 국가에서 태생했기 때문에 평화가 얼마나 고귀한지를 이야기해왔다. 신흥 종교에 꽂혀 있던 사이비(似而非)-저주(詛呪)의 관행을 벗겨낼 시대가 도래했다. 그러한 신흥종교-새종교도 세계적으로 내세울 수 있는 이론 체계를 갖추고 있기 때문이다.
대한민국 사람들은 이제 스스로를 존경할 때가 다가 왔다. 내부에서 숙성된 토착문화를 존대하게 되면, 세계적인 문화로 거듭나는 시대가 왔기 때문이다. 과도한 비판, 없는 사실을 있는 것처럼 왜곡하는 후진적인 습관에서 벗어나야 한다.
필자는 코로나19 전염초기, 이 질병의 최초 전파과정에서 사회적인 이목을 집중시켰던 신천지예수교증거장막성전(이만희 총회장)과 관련해서도 사실 기록에 앞장섰다. 이 교단은 국내 35만명, 해외 150만명의 신도 세(勢)를 지녔다. 준 강간혐의로 재판 중인 기독교복음서교회(JMS) 정명석 목사 사건, 허경영씨 종교활동 등에 대해서도 사실을 기록하려고 노력했다. JMS 교단의 전 세계 신도 수는 7만 5천 여 명 정도로 알려지고 있다.
필자는 “왜 신천지예수교회, JMS, 허경영 같은 교단-종교인들을 두둔하느냐?”라고 핀잔하는 말을 듣기도 했다. 기자란 어떤 일을 하는 사람인가? 사실을 기록하는 일은 하는 사람이다. 기자로서, 사실기록이 우선이라고 보았다.
정명석 목사 사건의 경우, 피해여성 이름이 한 명도 제대로 거명되지 않은 사건인데, 여성 1만명 이상을 성폭행 했다는 류(類)의 과도한 뻥 튀기식 언론보도는 근절(根絶)되는 게 마땅하다.
로마 교황청(가톨릭)은 중앙집권 방식이라 헌금이 교황청으로 모아진다. 1954년에 창립한 세계기독교통일신령협회(일명 통일교-문선명 교주)는 해외 선교에 성공, 대한민국으로 헌금이 송금되는 구조이다. 이 처럼, 종교의 해외 선교는 국가로 봐선 일종의 문화 상품이다.
한국어인공지능학회 이대로 회장은 “한국은 분열과 종교 늪에 빠져서 밤낮 싸우고 허우적거리느라 온 힘을 헛되게 써버리고 있다. 빨리 자주정신으로 무장하고 스스로 나라를 지킬 힘을 키워야 한다”고 지적했다.
대한민국은 이제 세계 속의 상위 국가로 거듭났다. 과거의 대한민국이 결코 아니다. 한국산 종교-신흥종교-새 종교들도 대한민국의 창조적인 문화(종교) 산업 중의 하나이다. 이제는 이들 종교 단체들이 세계를 상대로 정정당당하게 활동할 때가 되었다. 이미 신천지예수교회, JMS, 허경영 같은 교단조직-종교인들도 글로벌화 했다. 세계 속의 한국종교로 맹렬(?)하게 활동하고 있는 것. 이런 즈음에 그들이 지닌 구조적인 모순을 탁마(琢磨)하고, 이념을 재정비해 글로벌 이념체계로 탈바꿈 시키고, 새 종교와 새 종교의 지도자들이 국익기관-국익의 전도사로 거듭나도록 향도(嚮導)해야 할 것이다. moonilsuk@naver.com
