신천지예수교회는 8월20일자 보도자료에서 “날로 침체돼 가는 한국 교회를 쇄신하고, 성경을 기준으로 한 교계 발전 방향을 논의하기 위한 목회자·언론인 간담회가 대규모로 열려 교계의 주목을 받고 있다. 신천지예수교 증거장막성전(총회장 이만희, 이하 신천지예수교회)은 지난 8월18일 청평 신천지 평화연수원에서 ‘한국교회가 나아갈 길 2부’ 간담회를 열고 목회자와 언론인을 초청했다. 지난 7월 19일 열린 1차 간담회에 이은 2차 간담회로, 언론인은 물론 목회자도 초청해 폭넓은 소통의 장을 마련했다”고 전했다.
언론인과 목회자 등 200여명이 참석한 가운데 ‘하나님의 목적 12지파’란 주제로 열린 이날 간담회에서 신천지예수교회 이만희 총회장은 한국교회가 나아갈 길 주제로 성경 전반을 설명하며 오늘날 교회의 사명에 대해 언급했다.
이만희 총회장은 목회자들을 향해 “우리가 신앙을 했으니 (성경 말씀을)완벽하게 알고 가야 한다”며 “모르는 사람을 가르쳐줘야 도리”라고 이번 간담회의 취지를 설명했다. 이어 “진리 안으로 들어가서 하나가 되자”면서도 “(이해가 되지 않거나 궁금한 것이 있다면)얼마든지 대화로, 편지도 할 수 있고, 물어볼 수 있는데, 물어보지도 않고 비난하는 것은 옳지 않다”고 말했다. 이만희 총회장은 기성 교회와의 말씀 교류 업무협약(MOU) 등 목회자와 언론인의 모든 질문을 받으며 소통하려는 의지를 보였다. 이만희 총회장은 “기본적으로 신앙인이라면 성경 말씀을 전할 수 있는 자격이 있어야 한다”며 “목회자들도 계시록 말씀을 온전히 깨달아 자기 성도에게 가르친다면 얼마든지 발전할 수 있을 것”이라고 답했다.
현재 신학대학원 교수로 재직 중인 현직 목회자가 발제자로 나서 이번 간담회의 의미를 더했다. 발제자는 “현재 한국 기독교는 세상을 선하게 변화시켜야 하는 본래 사역을 잊은 채 이익 활동에 몰두하고 있다”며 “내가 가르치는 신학생들이 장차 나가야 할 곳이 이런 교계라는 생각에 교육자로서 암담한 마음이었다”고 언급했다.
