윤석열 대통령이 30일 신임 미 인도태평양사령관을 만나 "한·미 연합방위태세 강화에 힘써달라"고 당부했다고 대통령실이 전했다.
윤 대통령은 이날 오전 용산 대통령실에서 사무엘 파파로 신임 사령관을 접견하고 취임을 축하하며 이같이 말했다고 대통령실이 전했다. 파파로 사령관은 지난 3일 취임 후 아시아 국가를 순회 방문 중이다.
존 아퀼리노 전 사령관 후임인 파파로 사령관은 직전까지 인태사령부 소속 태평양함대 사령관으로 근무했다. 인태사령부는 미군 최대 작전 구역 인도태평양 지역 육해공군을 감독하는 통합 전투사령부다.
윤 대통령은 파파로 사령관이 직전까지 태평양함대사령관을 3년 간 역임하며 한반도 방위에 기여해온 점을 높이 평가 후 이번 인태사령관직 수행에도 기대감을 표했다.
