9일 경주시는 지난 달 황남시장 번영회, 황리단길 상가번영회 등과 간담회를 갖고 전체 상가 500여곳 중 60% 상가들이 방문객 요구에 따라 화장실을 사용을 허락하기로 합의했다고 밝혔다.
황리단길은 전통과 현대가 공존하는 개성 넘치는 거리로 지난해는 1300만 명이 방문한 경주의 관광명소다.
반면 그간 포석로 공용주차장 화장실, 숭혜전 소공원 화장실, 대릉원 화장실, 황리단길 생활문화센터 화장실 등 공용화장실 개수는 많지 않아 방문객들이 불편을 겪어 왔다.
방문객들은 상가 방문 시 개방 화장실 여부를 확인한 후 점포주 동의를 얻어 화장실을 사용하면 된다.
시는 이번 상가 화장실 일부 개방을 통해 방문객들에게 보다 편리하고 쾌적한 위생 공간을 제공해 줄 것으로 기대한다.
한편 경주시는 황리단길 쓰레기통 추가 설치와 청소인원 추가 배치, 인도정비 등으로 환경개선에 행정력을 집중하고 있다.
또 동부사적지와 황리단길 일원 만성적인 주차난 해소를 위해 추진 중인 ‘경주시 문화관광 통합 환승주차장 조성사업’도 하반기 착공을 목표로 속도를 내고 있다.
주낙영 시장은 “황리단길 상가 화장실이 일부 개방돼 방문객들이 더욱 쾌적한 환경에서 황리단길을 즐길 수 있어 더욱 상권이 활성화될 것으로 기대된다”고 전했다.
