울산국제목판화페스티벌 운영위원회는 7월18일 보도자료에서“오는 7월 19일부터 28일까지 울산문화예술회관에서 제12회 울산국제목판화페스티벌이 열린다”고 알렸다.
울산국제목판화페스티벌 운영위원회측은 이 자료에서 “울산 지역의 대표적인 문화 행사로 자리매김하고 있는 이 페스티벌은 울산광역시의 후원과 울산 제일일보의 주최로 개최된다. 페스티벌은 울산 울주군에 위치한 국보인 ‘반구대 암각화’와 ‘청전리 각석’ 등 유산의 역사적 가치를 조명하며, 이들 유산을 통해 목판화 문화의 비전을 제시한다. 이러한 문화적 자산은 유럽과 아시아를 넘어 세계적으로 확산되고 있으며, 지난해 '세계유산 등재신청 대상'으로 선정된 바 있다”면서 “페스티벌 운영위원회(박영근 위원장)는 이번 행사에서 울산이 판각문화의 중심지로서의 위상을 강화하고, 새로운 문화유형을 창조하는 데 앞장설 계획이라고 밝혔다. 또한, 울산 판각문화의 세계적 커뮤니티 형성과 유네스코 등재를 기원하는 특별전을 기획했다”고 전했다.
울산국제목판화페스티벌 운영위원회측은 “'화합’을 주제로 다양한 프로그램과 전시회 외에도 작가와의 간담회, 시민 체험교실, 판화학교 등이 진행될 예정이며, 참가자들은 태화강 유역의 전통문화와 역사를 경험할 수 있다. 특히, 시민들이 직접 참여하여 작품을 완성하고 전시에 출품하는 프로그램이 마련되어 있어 큰 기대를 모은다”고 소개하고 “전시 공간은 기존의 틀을 벗어나, 작가 개개인의 차별성을 존중하며 새로운 미디어와의 융합을 시도한다. 목판화와 미디어의 융합, 설치형 판화 등 다양한 실험적 장르를 선보이며, 관람객들에게 색다른 시각적 경험을 제공할 것”이라고 덧붙였다.

올해는 중국, 일본, 영국, 호주, 프랑스, 독일, 대만, 태국, 리투아니아 등 9개국에서 47명의 외국 작가와 한국 작가 55명이 참가하여 총 170여 점의 작품이 전시된다.
