윤석열 대통령이 22일 일본 전국 고교 야구선수권대회 고시엔에 한국계 교토 국제고의 첫 결승 진출에 "진심으로 자랑스럽다. 힘껏 응원하겠다"고 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 이날 페이스북을 통해 "유니폼이 성하지 않을 정도로 혼신의 힘을 다해 뛴 선수 여러분의 투지·열정에 큰 박수를 보낸다"며 이렇게 적었다.
그러면서 "고시엔은 일본 고교 야구에서 가장 권위 있는 대회로 매년 4000개 가까운 팀이 출전하고 있다"며 "저도 1983년 아버지께서 히토쓰바시 대학교에 교환 교수로 계실 때 여름을 일본에서 보냈는데 고시엔의 뜨거운 열기가 지금도 생생하다"고 회고했다.
또 "이렇게 큰 대회에 학생 수가 159명에 불과한 한국계 교토 국제고가 결승전에 진출한 것은 정말 대단한 일"이라며 "여러분이 진심으로 자랑스럽다"고 밝혔다.
이어 "여러분의 여름은 이제 시작이다"며 "야구를 통해 재일동포 사회와 우리 국민들에게 큰 기쁨을 안겨준 교토 국제고 야구팀·학생 여러분을 힘껏 응원하겠다"고 덧붙였다.
앞서 재일 한국계 민족학교 교토국제고는 고시엔에서 처음 결승에 오른 가운데 지난 1999년 일본고교야구연맹에 가입한 교토국제고가 25년 만에 이룬 위업이다. 지난 1915년 창설된 고시엔은 올해 106회째를 맞이한 일본의 대표 고교야구대회다.
