윤석열 대통령이 21일 "지금까지 공직 생활 하면서 자유민주주의란 신념 하나를 확고히 갖고 살아온 사람"이라며 "헌법재판소도 이런 헌법 수호를 위해 존재하는 기관인 만큼 재판관들께서 여러모로 잘 살펴주시길 부탁드린다"고 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 이날 오후 서울 종로구 헌법재판소에서 열린 탄핵심판 3차 변론기일에 직접 출석해 "여러 헌법 소송으로 업무가 과중한데 저의 탄핵 사건으로 고생하게 해 재판관들께 송구스러운 마음"이라며 "이같이 말했다.
윤 대통령 발언 이후 헌재는 윤 대통령 탄핵심판 3차 변론을 진행 중인 가운데 윤 대통령은 비상계엄 선포 배경 등에 대해 재판관들에게 직접 설명할 것으로 알려졌다.
윤 대통령이 공식석상에 모습을 드러낸 건 지난해 12·3 비상계엄 선포 이후 49일 만인 가운데 탄핵소추된 대통령의 현재 심판정 직접 출석은 이번이 처음이다.
윤 대통령은 이날 남색 정장·붉은 넥타이 차림으로 출석한 가운데 윤 대통령 측 변호인 차기환·도태우 변호사는 각각 윤 대통령 옆 및 뒤에 자리했다.
이날 오후 1시 59분께 헌재 재판관들이 입장하자 윤 대통령은 재판관을 향해 가볍게 목례하고, 언론의 카메라 플래시 세례 역시 외면않았다.
