이재명 민주당 대표가 갑자기 '민주당은 원래 중도 보수'라고 말하면서 당, 내외에 큰 파문이 일고 있습니다. 아마 그런 말을 처음 들은 분이라면 무척 당황스러웠을 겁니다.
하지만, 민주당이 진보=좌파=빨갱이들이라는 말은 원래 부터 틀린 말이었습니다. 소위 대한민국의 우파들이 민주당=빨갱이당이라는 인식을 국민들의 머리 속에 각인시켜 놓기 위해 만들어 놓은 일종의 덫인 것입니다.
원래 우리나라에는 진보를 표방하는 당으로 통합 진보당, 정의당, 사회당 등이 있었고 현재는 조국혁신당, 진보당, 기본소득당, 사회민주당 등이 있습니다.
민주당은 엄밀하게 정의하자면, 온건 진보, 중도, 합리적 보수를 포괄하는 당이라고 정의할 수 있을 것입니다. 따라서 극우 내란당과도 구별되고, 급진 진보당과도 구별된다고 할 수 있습니다.
따라서 이재명 대표가 민주당을 중도 보수당이라고 규정하는 것은 전혀 새삼스러운 표현이 아닙니다. DJ의 국민의정부, 노무현의 참여정부, 문재인의 문재인정부 모두 다 그러한 기조로 나라를 이끌어 왔습니다. 고 김대중 대통령께서도 생전에 민주당을 중도 우파(=중도 보수)라고 규정한 적이 있습니다.
노무현 정부에서는 대북송금 문제로 당내 보수파들이 떠났고, 이라크 파병문제로 진보파들이 떠났으며, 당시 한나라당과 대연정 문제로 그나마 남아 있던 당내 온건진보, 중도, 합리적 보수층들마저 등을 돌려서 지지율이 최악으로 치달았던 적이 있었습니다.
엄밀한 유럽 기준으로 보면 민주당은 중도 보수당에 속한다고 할 수 있으며, 국민의힘은 극우정당이라고 할 수가 있습니다. 따라서 역대 어느 민주당 대표도 민주당을 진보당이라고 규정한 적은 없으며, 보수당이라고 규정한 적도 없습니다.
따라서 민주당은 온건 진보, 중도, 합리적 보수를 아우르는 정당이라는 표현이 너무 길어서 중도 보수라고 불렀다고 하는 편이 올바른 표현이겠네요.
이재명 대표의 표현대로 국민의힘을 사이비 보수로 판단한다면, 민주당을 중도보수를 지향하는 정당이라고 규정한다고 해도 별로 이상하지는 않다고 봅니다.

이재명 대표가 중도보수라고 말하자 마치 이재명 대표가 당원들을 배신하고, 당의 총의를 모으지 않은 채 경솔한 말을 했다면서 들고 일어나고 있는 소위 비명계의 주장들이 말꼬리 잡기에 불과한 이유입니다.
