브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= KT는 국내 통신사 중 처음으로 친환경 보빈(케이블을 연속적으로 감는 데 사용하는 원통형 구조물)을 도입한다고 18일 밝혔다.
보빈은 케이블을 연속적으로 감는 데 사용하는 원통형 구조물이다. 목재로 만든 제품이 일반적이며, 케이블 보관과 운송에 활용된다.
KT가 도입하는 보빈은 산업통상자원부에서 인증한 폐플라스틱(저밀도 폴리에틸렌으로)으로 만든 제품이다. 10회 이상 다시 사용할 수 있다는 점이 이 제품의 장점이다. 일반 보빈 대비 가격이 비싸고 수거 작업이 어려워 확산되지 못했다.
KT는 LS전선, 대한광통신, 가온전선, 머큐리광통신, 이에스테크인터내셔널 5개 광케이블사와 친환경 보빈 공급사 간 협의를 진행해 렌탈 공급 방식으로 친환경 보빈의 가격을 낮췄다. 사물인터넷 기반의 관제 서비스를 적용해 수거의 어려움을 극복했다.
KT는 오는 4월부터 납품 받는 광케이블에 친환경 보빈을 사용한다. 연간 약 2500개 목재 보빈이 친환경 제품으로 대체된다. 친환경 보빈 사용을 점진적으로 확대해 전체 광케이블에 적용할 계획이다.
친환경 보빈은 목재 사용량을 줄여 산림 훼손을 방지하고, 온실가스 1만2500㎏을 감축한다. 전기 사용량 2만7200kWh(4인 가족 기준 78가구가 한 달 동안 사용하는 전기량) 절감과 동일한 효과를 낸다. 포장 폐기물이 감소하고, 보빈 폐기 비용을 절감하는 효과도 기대할 수 있다.
KT는 폐플라스틱 재활용 자재를 사용해 친환경 구매를 강화하고, 자원의 선순환을 실천해 광케이블 제조사와 동반 성장을 도모한다는 방침이다.
KT 구매실장 이원준 전무는 “자원을 일회성으로 소모하는 기존의 선형 경제는 지속 가능하지 못하다”며 “폐플라스틱을 재자원화해 순환 경제로 전환하는 것은 천연자원 소모를 줄이고, 폐기물을 저감하는 효과적인 방법이다. 앞으로도 KT는 구매혁신을 통한 ESG 경영으로 기업 경쟁력을 강화해 나가겠다”고 말했다.
