4월의 마지막 날인 30일 오후, 유재순(柳在順) 작가가 필자의 사무실(브레이크뉴스)을 방문했다. 필자가 유재순 작가를 처음 만난 해는 1980년. 당시, 필자와 유재순 작가는 르포라이터라는, 프리랜서 기자를 선언, 각종 주간신문-월간지 등에 기고를 했었다.
유재순 작가는 1985년에 월간 신동아에 '난지도 사람들'로 등단, 이 제목의 책을 발간하기도 했다. 이어 출간했던 “서울서 팔리는 여자들”도 베스트셀러가 됐다.
이 당시, 필자의 저서 '이색지대'도 베스트셀러에 진입했다.
필자는 유재순 작가와 함께 한국에서의 르포라이터 시대를 열었다. 필자와 유재순 작가는 긴 연륜(年輪), 글을 써온, 글쓰기 작가의 동지(同志)인 셈이다. 뿐만 아니라, 지난 45년 간 글쓰기의 라이벌적 관계였다.
1980년 대, 유재순 작가는 일본의 동경으로, 필자는 뉴욕으로 각각 떠났다. 두 사람은 일본-미국에서 각 각 문명(文名)을 날렸다. 일본 동경에 정착한 유재순 작가는 일본의 유력 매체들에 기고를 계속했었다.

유재순 작가는 그간 일본의 유력 정치인인 나카소네 야스히로, 도이 다카코, 다케시타 노보루, 우노 소스케와 인터뷰를 했었다. 미치코 황후와도 인터뷰를 가졌었다. 또한 태국의 츄안 수상, 미얀마 아웅산 수지, 필리핀의 이멜다 마르코스와도 인터뷰를 가졌었다.
일본에 체류하는 동안 “하품의 일본인”이라는 저서를 출간, 베스트셀러로 팔리기도 했다. 이 분은 한국인 출신으로 일본에서 활동하는 유명작가로 성공했다. 이어 인터넷 신문인 '제이피뉴스'의 발행인으로도 일했다. 국제적인 언론활동을 해온, 유명 언론인의 자리를 구축했다.
뉴욕 맨해튼에 머물었던 필자는 '비록 중앙정보부(전 3권)'라는 저서를 남겼다. 정보기관의 공작사를 다룬 책이라, 한국에서는 쓸 수 없었다. 이는 치외법권 국가인 미국에서만 가능한 일이었다. 작가에게 부여된 행운이었다.
