충남 서천군이 세계유산인 서천갯벌의 생태적 가치를 널리 알릴 해설사 양성에 나섰다. 지난 19일 군은 조류생태전시관에서 ‘서천갯벌해설사 양성과정’ 입교식을 열고 본격적인 교육에 돌입했다고 21일 밝혔다.
이번 과정은 국가유산청이 주관한 세계유산 활용 공모사업에 선정돼 추진되는 사업이다. 갯벌의 보존 필요성과 생물 다양성에 대한 전문적 해설이 가능하도록 주민 역량을 강화하는 데 목적을 두고 있다.
과정 운영은 함께그린연구소가 맡았다. 전국 각지에서 40여 명이 신청서를 냈고, 지역 거주 여부와 지원 동기를 고려해 최종 23명이 선발됐다. 교육은 오는 7월 20일까지 매주 월요일에 열리며, 해설사로서 필요한 생태 지식은 물론 현장 소통 역량까지 다각도로 다뤄질 예정이다.
한 수강생은 “서천갯벌이 가진 가치를 새롭게 깨닫는 시간”이라며 “앞으로 고향에 의미 있는 역할을 할 수 있을 것 같아 기대된다”고 소감을 전했다.
교육을 이수한 참여자에게는 서천갯벌해설사로 활동할 수 있는 자격이 부여된다. 이를 통해 지역 주민이 세계유산의 가치를 주체적으로 전파하는 기반이 마련될 전망이다.
김기웅 서천군수는 “지역민이 직접 갯벌해설사가 되어 서천갯벌의 소중함을 전국에 알릴 수 있도록 적극 뒷받침하겠다”고 밝혔다.
서천갯벌은 유네스코 세계자연유산으로 등재된 ‘한국의 갯벌’ 네 곳 중 하나로, 다양한 철새와 해양 생물이 서식하는 생태 보고로 평가받는다.
