이 회장은 이날 추모사를 통해 “독립투쟁 당시 백범선생을 모시고 더불어 싸우셨던 애국지사는 이제 몇 분 남지 않으셨다. 날이 갈수록 독립의 역사는 잊혀져가고 있다.”면서 “‘우리의 독립은 독립투쟁의 결과가 아니라 연합국의 승리에 의하여 어느 날 도둑처럼 찾아왔다’는 자기 비하의 소리가 여기저기 들리고 있다.”고 자조했다.
이어 “우리의 독립투쟁을 테러리즘이라고 모독하는 사람들도 있다. 항간에는 이런 부류의 사람을 뉴 라이트라 지칭한다. 저는 그들이 뉴 라이트인지 올드 라이트인지 모르지만 하여간 올바른 라이트는 아닌 것이 분명하다”고 비판했다.
아울러 “라이트란 ‘우익’이란 말이다. 보수의 대명사이기도 하다. 보수란 전통적인 가치를 지키는 사람들을 말한다.”면서 “우리의 전통적인 가치에 어디 그런 매국적인 개념이 존재하나?”되물으며, “진정한 보수란 바로 백범선생이 말씀하신 문화 국민을 지칭한 것이며, 백범 선생이야말로 보수 그 자체”라고 주장했다.

이어 “사회 곳곳에 숨어서 암약한 그들은 기회만 있으면 고개를 들고 나왔다. 육사에서 독립투쟁 영웅들의 흉상을 제거하려는 것도 그들이요, 독립기념관에 아무런 산출 근거도 없이 지금까지 애써 연구한 독립운동사를 뒤엎기 위해 국민의 세금 240억원이란 거금으로 새로 독립기념관을 짓겠다고 날뛰는 것도 그들”이라고 일갈했다. 이 회장은 육사출신으로 김대중 정부 초대 국정원장으로도 널리 알려진 인물이다.
