해양 생태계의 소중함을 전하는 교육이 시각장애 아동들에게도 닿을 수 있게 됐다.
충남 서천군 국립해양생물자원관(관장 김현태, 이하 자원관)은 개관 10주년을 맞아 해양 교육 동화 3종을 큰 글자 도서와 점자도서로 제작해, 지난달 27일 대전맹학교에 기부했다고 1일 밝혔다.
기부된 도서는 자원관이 직접 기획·출간한 어린이 해양 교육 동화책인 '혹등이의 씨큐리움 대탐험', '바닷속 보물 해양천연물을 찾아라!', '초록별의 해양보호생물을 지켜라!' 등 3종으로, 시각장애 학생의 읽기 접근성을 높이기 위해 각각 큰 글자 도서와 점자도서로 새롭게 편집됐다.
특히 점자도서의 제작 과정에는 자원관 직원들이 직접 참여해 공공기관의 역할과 의미를 더욱 깊게 새겼다.
자원관은 이번 대전맹학교 전달을 시작으로, 전국 점자도서관과 시각장애인 복지관, 맹학교 등 14개 기관에 해당 도서를 순차적으로 배포할 계획이다. 동시에 장애 유형을 고려한 새로운 해양 교육 콘텐츠 개발에도 속도를 낼 방침이다.
문성준 대전맹학교 교장은 “시각장애 학생들은 시각적 제약으로 인해 다양한 학습 자원에서 소외되기 쉬운데, 이번 점자도서 기부는 해양이라는 낯설고 광범위한 주제를 아이들이 보다 쉽게 이해하고 흥미를 가질 수 있도록 돕는 귀중한 계기가 됐다”며 “장애 학생들도 해양 생물의 가치와 환경 보호의 중요성을 충분히 배울 수 있는 기반이 마련된 점에 큰 의미가 있다”고 밝혔다.
한편, 국립해양생물자원관은 해양수산부 산하 전문기관으로 해양 생물자원의 보전과 지속 가능한 활용을 위한 조사·연구뿐 아니라, 해양 생태 교육과 대국민 인식 제고를 위한 콘텐츠 제작 등 공공 교육 역할도 지속적으로 확대하고 있다.
