충남 예산군이 덕산면 시량리 출신 윤영석 선생을 ‘2025년 7월의 독립운동가’로 선정했다고 2일 밝혔다.
윤 선생은 매헌 윤봉길 의사의 친동생으로, 형과 함께 항일계몽운동과 농촌개혁운동에 깊이 참여하며 일제의 탄압 속에서도 민족의식을 일깨우는 데 헌신한 인물이다.
윤영석 선생은 1926년 10월, 윤봉길 의사가 결성한 ‘각곡독서회’의 일원으로 활동을 시작했다. 이어 1929년 3월 28일에는 일본 제국주의를 풍자한 촌극 토끼와 여우 공연에 참여해 민중 계몽의 일환으로 일제의 침략정책을 비판했다. 이는 단순한 연극 이상의 의미를 지녔으며, 당대 청년들에게 시대의식을 환기시키는 계기가 됐다.
이듬해 4월 8일, 윤 선생은 야학 청년들이 중심이 된 ‘월진회’에 합류하여 본격적인 농촌부흥운동과 계몽활동에 나섰다. 특히 1930년 3월 15일, 윤봉길 의사가 중국으로 망명한 이후에는 윤 선생이 월진회의 중심축 역할을 맡아 토론회와 민족교육운동을 주도하며 조직을 유지·발전시켰다.
